『パドヴァの 愛国少年』第3話を読んでみましょう：
Every one stared [=gazed] at him; some questioned him, but he made no reply, and seemed to hate and despise [=look down on] every one. Nevertheless, three travelers, persisting in their questioning, succeeded in making him unloosen [= getting him to loosen] his tongue; and in a few rough words, a mixture of Venetian, French, and Spanish, he related his story. These three travelers were not Italian, but they understood him; and partly out of compassion, partly because they were excited [=intoxicated] with wine, they gave him a few coins, jesting ｗｉｔｈ [=making fun of] him and urging him on to tell them other things; and as several ladies entered the salon at the moment, they gave him some more money for the purpose of making a show, and cried: ‘Take this! Take this, too!’ as they made the money rattle [=clatter] on the table.
皆が彼を見つめ、何人かが彼に質問したが、彼は何も答えず皆を憎み、軽蔑しているように見えた。それでも、3人の旅客がしつこく質問し続けたので、少年は堅い口を緩め、ベネチア語、フランス語、スペイン語混じりの荒っぽい言葉で 身の上話をした。三人の旅客はイタリア人ではなかったが、彼の話を理解した。ちょっぴりかわいそうに思ったり、ワインで酔いも回っていたので、小銭をやって、彼をからかって、他のことをもっと話すようにけしかけた。 その時、数人の婦人方が客室にはいってきたので、男たちは、もっと面白がらせようと、小銭をさらに出しながら、ほうらこれ、ほうらこれも、と叫んで、テーブルの上に小銭をがちゃがちゃさせた。
諷刺画に関するDさん（98歳・女性）の返事は次のように書かれていました。
I don't approve of the actions of either Putin or Netanyahu. Don't forget that Hamas is also killing innocent people. プーチンもネタニヤフも許せない。また、ハマスも無実な市民を殺害していることも忘れてはならない。
同じく、Eさん（シアトル在住・女性）の感想です：
I think many people would agree! It is sad that in this day and age people like this still exist! 風刺画に多数の人が賛成だと思う。今日、この時代にこのような人物がいることは悲しいことだ。
従姉のMarieさんからWent from winter to spring との件名で春の飾りつけの写真が送られてきました：
追記の一行にThe weather has been balmy with no rain.（天気はおだやかで雨もなしです）とありました。
はや、1月も残すところ1日となりました。 予約している月刊誌を半分も読まないうちに次号が届いたり、 毎週1回配達を予約している食料品が、ほんの2～3日で再び配達されてくるような錯覚に陥ることの繰り返しです。 私の動作や頭の回転がひどくのろいために外界の速度に追いつけず、そんな感覚になるのかも知れないと思っています。
