筆者はBulletin of the Atomic Scientistsのニューズレターを受け取っている。 2023/01/24の更新の内容は次のようであった：
終末時計の針が (the hands of the Doomsday Clock)が(were set to 90 seconds to midnight[= Armageddon/ the end of the world])深夜12時[＝アルガメドン/この世の終焉] まであと90秒にセットされた。
The team behind it largely blamed the decision on the "mounting dangers in the war in Ukraine”, which has raised "profound questions" around mankind's continued existence. 委員会はこの決定を下した背景の主たる理由は人類の存続に深い問題を起こしているウクライナに於ける戦争の深刻化であると指摘した。
What is the Doomsday Clock?
世界終末時計とは？
US scientists involved in the Manhattan Project and the first nuclear weapons founded the clock to represent the dangers to the planet.
マンハッタン計画（＝原子爆弾開発のための計画）で最初の核兵器に関わったアメリカの科学者が、地球の危機を表すために作った時計である。
According to Eugene Rabinowitch (1901-1973), the first editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists journal, the clock was an image used to “frighten human beings into rationality”. He moved the minute hand to three minutes to midnight in 1949.
Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists誌の初代編集長ユージン・ラビノウィッチによると、時計は、人間を怖がらせて理性的にするための象徴だった。彼は1949年に分針を23時57分にセットした。
Rachel Bronson, president and chief executive of Bulletin, believes the clock is vital to raise awareness of man-made global threats.
Bulletin社のプレジデント兼CEOであるレイチェル・ブロンソン氏は、人災起因の地球の脅威に対する認識を高めるために、終末時計が不可欠であると考えている。

1953, 2 minutes to midnight: The USA tests their first hydrogen bomb（1953年、あと2分に縮まった。米国の初の水爆実験行わる）
1962, 7 minutes to midnight: Cuban Missile Crisis is resolved（1962年、あと7分に戻った。キューバ危機が解消）
1972, 12 minutes to midnight: Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty is passed（1972年、あと12分に伸びた。戦略兵器制限条約批准される）
1981, 4 minutes to midnight: Cold War is re-ignited when Ronald Reagan is elected and the Soviets invade Afghanistan（1981年、あと4分に縮まる。レーガンの当選とソビエトのアフガニスタン侵攻により冷戦再燃）
1990, 10 minutes to midnight: The Berlin Wall falls （1990年、あと10分に伸びる。 ベルリンの壁が前年崩壊した）
1991, 17 minutes to midnight: Cold War ends. （1991年、あと17分に伸びる。冷戦が終わる）
2002, 7 minutes to midnight: Following 9/11, fears increase of nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands. （2002年、あと7分に縮まる。９/１１の後、核兵器が悪魔の手に落ちる恐れが高まる）
2017, 2-and-a-half minutes to midnight: President Donald Trump’s vagueness regarding nuclear weapon use and the rise of nationalism. (2017, あと2分半に縮まる。ドナルド・トランプ大統領の核兵器使用に関する曖昧さと、ナショナリズムの台頭)
2021, 100 seconds to midnight: World leaders deemed unprepared to deal with climate change, nuclear threat and the pandemic. （2021年、あと100秒に縮まる。世界の首脳達が気候変動、核戦争の脅威、疫病への対策を講じていないと思われる）
2023, 90 seconds to midnight: Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February last year. （2023年、あと90秒に縮まる。昨年2/24のロシアのウクライナ侵攻始まる）
世界の終末のことは、知らぬが仏(Ignorance is bliss)として避けたいと思われる方も多いでしょう。 そんな折、友人から面白川柳が送られてきました。 口直し（a palate cleanser）にしていただければ幸いです:
立ち上がり 用事忘れて また座る
F１を 一階フロアーと 言う課長
つまずいて 振り返ったが 何もない
万歩計 半分以上は 探し物
温かく 迎えてくれるは 便座だけ
アーンして むかしラブラブ いま介護
いびきより 静かな方が 気にかかり
起きたけど 寝るまで特に 用事なし
断捨離で うっかり夫も 捨てました
無農薬 こだわりながら 薬漬け
週初めの大寒波で雪がかなり積もりました。雪下ろしなることを生まれて初めて体験。疲れ切ったけど面白くもありました。冬来たりなば春遠からじ(If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?)と言います。戦争の終息が伴って本当の春が訪れますように……ひ～くん
