Ugly Produce(1)

:Hey Shota, how was your weekend?

U: I visited a farmers market in Westchester County. It was a fascinating experience.

C:Well, that's a first. I've never heard a farmers market described as fascinating. What about it did you find so interesting?

U:The imperfect fruits and vegetables. One of the stall featured produce labeled proudly imperfect. They are fruits and vegetables that have some blemishes, or which are a bit oddly shaped. That's something you wouldn't often see in the Japanese market.

:Yes, I noticed that when I was in Japan a while back. Every single apple, carrot, orange, corn cob and pea pod at the local greengrocer's with perfectly shaped, with nary a blemish to be seen.

C:You know, tons of tons of food are thrown out and left a lot in fields every year all of the world. One reason is that they don't meet arbitrary visual standards. But there are people working to cut down on such waste. And they have some success in getting the food industry to look for ways to throw away less.
