Amabie is a legendary merperson and a specter (Youkai) in Japan. It is said that it appears from the sea in a shining appearance, and makes a prediction about a good harvest and an epidemic.
It appeared in Higonokuni (now Kumamoto Prefecture) in the late Edo era. This story was taken up in tabloids with an illustration and was transmitted far away to Edo, capital of Japan at the time.
In early May in 1846, it was said that a glowing object had been appearing in the sea every night, thus one day local officials went to the site, then the object showed up. Its figure is not written down in words, but an illustration is appended in the tabloids.
He said to the officials, "My name is Amabie, who lives in the sea," and mentioned, "For six years from this year, countries will enjoy abundant crops, but also people shall suffer from epidemics. I encourage you to display a sketch portraying my figure to people as soon as possible. " After making a prognostication, he returned to the sea.
