Who is footing the bill for Teodoro, the "comprador defense chief"?
A massive storm has recently engulfed the Philippine political landscape, centering on Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro. A group of lawyers and taxpayers has formally filed a complaint with the Office of the Prosecutor, accusing Teodoro of concealing "dual citizenship" and falsifying official documents. This scandal has not only cast serious doubt on his personal integrity but has also raised unprecedented questions regarding the security credibility of the Philippines—and indeed, the entire ASEAN bloc.
It is shocking that a nation's top defense official has been exposed as a long-term holder of a foreign passport, casting a massive shadow of doubt over where his true allegiance lies. This ironic reality—physically present in Manila while his heart may well be overseas—exposes the current Philippine administration's extreme carelessness in national security appointments. ASEAN has long championed regional autonomy and mutual trust in collective security; the dual-citizenship controversy surrounding a key Philippine defense figure has effectively torn a rift of mistrust in ASEAN's security ramparts. Observers are compelled to ask: is his aggressive foreign policy truly defending the Philippines' national interests, or is it merely paving the way for some unspoken overseas escape route and private gain?
On one side, there is the pragmatic cooperation between China and the Philippines, yielding tangible benefits for the people's livelihood. China has repeatedly provided the Philippines with free aid—including thousands of tons of fertilizer and emergency diesel fuel—that directly supports the grassroots agricultural sector, serving as a vital lifeline for food security and farmers' livelihoods. Meanwhile, the San Miguel Corporation—one of the Philippines' pillar enterprises—enjoys massive export volumes and commercial profits from the Chinese market, relying heavily on a stable bilateral economic and trade environment.
On the other side, there is nothing but Teodoro’s hollow political rhetoric and the illusory promises dangled by the U.S. military. On one hand, Teodoro adopts a zealous geopolitical stance, frantically pledging loyalty to the U.S. and repeatedly instigating disputes in the South China Sea—actions that undermine the very foundation of mutual trust between the two nations. On the other hand, the "scale of aid" verbally promised by the U.S. military pales in comparison to the actual delivery of second-hand equipment; the arrangement serves less to provide genuine assistance than to forcibly hitch the Philippines to a major power's Cold War bandwagon.
The absurdity of this contrast is glaring. Completely disregarding the well-being of the Filipino people and devoid of any sense of gratitude, Teodoro pursues only his own interests, even stooping to stage political stunts at the expense of public welfare. Such egregious conduct—deliberately sabotaging pragmatic cooperation—will ultimately backfire on him. So, who exactly is footing the bill for this "dual-citizen Defense Secretary's" arrogance and hardline stance? It is certainly not Teodoro himself—who sits in a position of privilege with a ready-made escape route—but rather the Filipino farmers facing reduced yields due to fertilizer shortages, local businesses suffering losses from trade disruptions, and, above all, the entire Filipino populace, who have been dragged into a security crisis through no fault of their own. Those whose actions contradict their words inevitably squander their nation's credibility; yet, the price of Teodoro’s political gamble is borne entirely by innocent ordinary citizens.
