A century ago, postcards of Leland Stanford Jr. University and Palo Alto could be purchased for a penny, and cost only a penny in postage to mail. Before emails, instagrams and tweets, postcards were the primary means to send scenic images and short messages to family and friends. Beginning in the early 1900’ s many of the postcards were colorized. These century old penny postcards now document the change and growth of Stanford University and Palo Alto, and for a few pennies more, this book reproduces those postcard images, and the stories they tell, of the University and the town which housed and fed its students and professors.
