今日は毎週おなじみ、英語レッスンです
'Inside out/ backwards にも幾つか意味がありますが、今回は日常会話の中で何気なく使われる意味を学習します。それではいつものように例を見ながら学習していきましょう。
それでは最初に 'Inside out' の例です。ここでは息子のファッションについて話をする母と娘の会話を思い浮べて下さい。
A: "Look at him. Isn't that inside out? He is wearing that shirt inside out, right? "
B: "So?"
A: "Tell him that. He doesn't know."
B: "Mother, what are you talking about? Of course he does. He is doing it on purpose, mom. That's a part of fashion now."
A: "Are you sure?"
B: "Please don't start now."
A: "ちょっとあの子、あれ裏表逆に着てない? あれって裏表逆よね。"
B: "それで？"
A: "言ってあげなさい。気づいてないのよ。"
B: "何言ってんの？ちゃんとわかってるわよ。わざとやってるの。ファッションなのよ。"
A: "本当にそうなの？"
B: "お願いだから恥ずかしいこと言わないで。"
それでは次に 'Backwards' の例を見てみましょう。ここでは最初の会話が行われた翌日、また同じような状況に出くわす親と娘の会話を思い浮べてください。
A: "My God, now backwards, look at him. First inside out and now backwards. I can never understand the latest fashion for you guys."
B: "What are you talking about?"
A: "Well, I just noticed that he was wearing his shirt backwards now. But I think again that is a part of fashion, isn't it? "
B: "My God, no mom, that is not a part of fashion at all. Just tell him about that before he embarrasses himself in front of his friends."
A: "I have no idea this fashion thing you guys are into. Inside out is fashion but not backwards."
B: "Whatever, mother, just go tell him. Hurry! You know him. He'll be upset if we don't let him know."
A: "OK. I will."
A: "あら今度は後ろ前逆だわ、あの子。裏表の次は後ろ前、あんた達のファッションは一体どうなってんのかさっぱりわからないわ。"
B: "何言ってんの？"
A: "あの子今度はシャツを後ろ前逆に着てるのよ。でもまたファッションなんでしょう？"
B: "違うわよ。友達の前で恥かく前に教えてあげなきゃ。"
A: "ますますわからないわ。裏表はよくて後ろ前はだめなの？"
B: "何でもいいから、早く言ってあげて。知ってるでしょう。もし教えなかったことが後で分かったら、あの子どうなるか。"
A: "分かったわよ。今言ってくるわよ。"
もうお分かりですね。'Inside out' は裏表逆に着るで、'Backwards' は後ろ前逆に着るという意味になります。今後はしっかり意味を理解した上で使うようにして下さい。
