That's right. No matter what you may have read or heard there really isn't anything that a credit repair company can do for you that is special or something that they are authorized to do that you can't. As a matter of fact, the FTC is currently conducting investigations into many so-called credit repair companies and the promises and practices they make.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA) are the two main pieces of legislation that govern your rights concerning credit and credit reporting. You should read them.

Part of the law provides you the right to receive a copy of your credit report once per year for review. However, you need to be careful because while many places advertise a "Free Report" that is typically an offer associated with paid services of some sort. This is not the free report that the government provides for you. While you may be able to obtain the report from more than one official source, the one that I recommend to my students and clients is [http://www.annualcreditreport.org]. You should take notice of the dot org, as this means that the website is a non-for-profit entity.

You are probably thinking, "How can he say that$%:", well hold on...I know your score is important to you (and it is) but not for the purpose of reviewing your report.

The point of getting a copy of the report is to review the data...period! Before you get too wrapped up in your score, you need to focus on what is contained in the report.
