Coughing to threaten or intimidate police officers and shop workers amid the coronavirus pandemic could land you in jail for two years, U.K. authorities have warned.
The Crown Prosecution Service issued a statement following reports that emergency workers have been coughed at by people claiming to carry the infection. That could lead to assault charges, the CPS said.
“Let me be very clear: this is a crime and needs to stop,” Max Hill, the CPS’s director of public prosecutions, said in the statement. “The CPS stands behind emergency and essential workers and will not hesitate to prosecute anybody who threatens them as they go about their vital duties.”

Police and prosecutors around Europe are cracking down on people exploiting the virus. In Switzerland, undercover Zurich police on Wednesday arrested a 21-year-old woman for trying to sell protective face masks for 10 francs ($10.30) apiece in a sting operation amid the global crack down on price-gouging during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Swiss police set up a sting operation in the Zurich suburb of Altstetten to lure the woman into meeting a plainclothes officer after they saw an online ad promoting the masks at 1,900% their normal price of 50 centimes.
After demanding 100 Swiss francs for 10 masks, she was arrested and taken to a police station for questioning. The case has been reported to prosecutors.
