The marriage proposal at the beginning is the first of many moments where what is unsaid leaves more for the viewer to consider. The suddenness of war (the proposal was at Christmas-time 1941, just a week or two after Pearl Harbor) means neither party has had much time to contemplate what they might do at the start of US involvement in the war. They are both more mature than the average soldier going off to war, and it would appear his proposal, her declination, and his acceptance, reflect the wisdom older participants in the war brought to the table.
The near-continuous battle, and the resulting lack of time for the Captain (or the viewer) to reflect creates a sense of what it may be like in a combat situation like that. I wanted to reflect on the reactions of the Captain and crew to the sinking of the first sub (cheers of victory. for surviving, release of fear, for beating the enemy. but sadness for the fellow mariners who died doing their job, or simply the death of souls) but instead, the next challenge demands full involvement.
After near-continuous tension of battle with little time to reflect, the final scenes after the danger is past again leave little time to process. the Captain prepares for bed, says a brief prayer, and goes to sleep with little reflection, the angle of light through the portholes shifting to show the change of course to sail to port, but unseen by the Captain, as his job was done. Even the denied request by the Captain to accompany the convoy to port adds to understanding. In a typical movie, the Captain gets to take the ship in, cheers all around, but in actual conflict, the necessities of getting damaged warships to repair facilities and the simple logistics of avoiding unnecessary deployment of resources dictates the outcome here. The Captain accepts the decision without comment, the trained soldier following the order and accepting it without need for explanation or any apparent reaction, much as another commenter here noted the crew accepting the Captain's decisions without argument.
I'm sure those who have served in combat have more, possibly conflicting, takes on all this, and I cannot pretend to know what it is really like. But as a civilian, I hope this movie has provided some realistic insight for me into the experience of those who have served.
