My final project for my Education Technology class is to share a problem I identified during my classroom observations. I visited an elementary school media center during individual computer time and math class. I notices several problems with classroom technology, listed below:
Problems
· Several students had difficulties logging into their account.
· Students asked for help, passwords were written down on notecards.
· Media center teacher reported that students had many passwords to memorize.
· Accounts used to access Khan Academy, google docs for both school and home use.
I identified the primary cause of these issues as password management. I noticed some additional problems with password management:
· Lost instruction time
· Security issues: written passwords
· Is this level of password security necessary for this age level?
· Students know each other’s passwords
· Students having difficulty logging in from home.
I can personally empathize with students because I have difficulty remembering my own passwords with all the technology surrounding us. I confess that I have used the same passwords for several accounts even though this is not a good security practice. Although password management and internet security are important, is extra security on elementary students necessary??? It seems like we lose more classroom time troubleshooting passwords than the educational benefits of using technology in the first place.
As a parent, the password issue came up in our house hold. My older son, he was in the middle school at that time, could not complete an assignment because he forgot his password for Google Doc’s account. We personal had to deal with this issue to do middle school homework. I can relate this issue as a teacher and a parent.
My biggest question regarding this issue is whether this level of security is necessary at the elementary education level? I understand there is a deeper subject around network security that includes privacy protections. I also understand there is difference between educators and IT. There are several possible solution to the password management issues. Ideally, a new system should consider the needs of the educators and grade level of the students. Other solution includes secure database login information which is NOT written on note cards. Using dongles, ID cards or access cards would help but there is a risk of losing these items. Another easy solution would be to create shared or temporary usernames and passwords. GoNoodle.com has an interesting option utilizing parent and child accounts. Parent accounts are secure web accounts but child accounts have easier access which helps children to take advantage of the web site.
There is no simple solution to this issue, but planning or thinking ahead would help to minimize lost instruction time. We are using technology more and more, it may be a good idea to discuss the importance of usernames and passwords with the students as technologies are not going away.

今学期はEducation Technologyというクラスをとっていて、これは卒業前のファイナルプロジェクトです。このクラスをとるにあたり、学校を実際に訪れ、授業や学校生活を観察し、問題、疑問を見つけ、その改善策を自分なりに発見するという課題です。今回、私が提案する問題は、コンピュータールーム、算数の授業で目にした、生徒全員が持っているパスワードについてです。
問題点
· パスワードが覚えられず、ログイン出来ない。
· パスワードはメモされ保管されている。生徒が分からない場合は先生に聞いて、メモを見せてもらう。
· 最近の生徒は各自色々なアカウントを持っている為、それぞれのパスワードを覚えなければならない。
· Khan Academyやグーグルなどのアカウントに学校、又は自宅からアクセスが必要な時もある。自宅でログイン失敗の場合は、課題ができるのか？
上記の問題点が原因で起こる更なる問題
· ログインまでに時間が掛かり、授業に影響が出る。
· セキュリティの問題：パスワードがメモとして残されている。
· 小学生にパスワードは必要なのか。
· 生徒同士パスワードを教え合う。
· 家からアクセスする場合、パスワードを忘れてしまい、ログインできない。
私自身、Ｅメール、ソーシャルネットワーキングサイト等、多数のアカウントを持ち、それらに伴う複数のパスワード管理には苦労しています。正直に言うと、違うパスワードを使用したら覚える事ができないので、同じパスワードをそれぞれのアカウントに使用しています。セキュリティの面では、良くない事だと分かっているのですが…。大人が使用するさまざまなアカウントにはそれなりのセキュリティが必要なのは分かるのですが、小学校で使用するコンピューターへのログイン、アカウントへのアクセスに関しては、セキュリティ設定を厳しくする必要があるのか疑問に思います。簡単にアクセスできるようになれば、授業時間のロスは無くなると思うのです。
実際に私たちが経験した事なのですが、中学生の息子が、宿題で自宅のパソコンからグーグルドライブへアクセスしなければいけない時があり、ＩＤ、パスワードで苦労しました。中学生の彼にとっては、宿題をやらなければいけないプレッシャーと間違えて記憶したパスワードでログインできないプレッシャーとで嫌な思いをしました。今のテクノロジーに着いて行くには、この年齢からこういった経験をしなければいけないのですね。
最後に、これらの問題の解決策を私なりに考えてみました。まず、生徒のパスワードの保管方法に関してです。現在ほとんどの学校では、パスワードはメモされ、先生が保管していますが、その方法ではなく、きちんと管理されたデータベースに残す事。生徒が無くすというリスクはありますが、ＩＤカードやドングルの使用。そして、生徒全員が同じログイン、パスワードを使用しても良いのではないかとも思います。
この問題に関しては、簡単な解決策ないとも思うのですが、大事な事は、これから様々なテクノロジーが増えていく中、子供達とパスワードの大切さを話し合う事だと思います。
