「あらすじ」
ナカタさんは迷い猫の「ゴマ」を探している。茶色の縞猫（オオツカさん）との会話はむずかしい。シャム猫のミミが通訳を申し出る。
三日から四日前の雨の翌日、ミミは高層住宅建設予定の草地でいるのを、オオツカさんは見かけららしい。
100 The Siamese nodded lightly, and like a ballet dancer nimbly leaped down from the concrete wall. Black tail held up high like a flagstaff she walked leisurely over and sat down beside Kawamura. He immediately began to sniff Mimi's rump, but the Siamese gave him a swift blow to the cheek and the younger cat shrunk back. With barely a pause Mimi dealt him another blow to the nose.
"Now pay attention, you brainless dingbat! You stinky good-for-nothing!" Mimi hissed, then turned to Nakata. "You've got to show him who's in charge straight off or you'll never get anywhere. Otherwise he'll go all spacy on you, and all you get is drivel. It's not his fault he's this way, and I do feel sorry for him, but what are you to do?"
"I see," Nakata said, not at all sure what was agreeing to.

シャム猫は軽くうなずいて、バレエでも踊るように、ブロック塀からひらりと地面に降りた。 そして黒い尻尾を旗竿のようにまっすぐ上に立てたままゆっくりと歩いてきて、カワムラさん の隣に座った。カワムラさんはすぐ鼻先をのばしてミミのお尻の匂いを嗅ごうとしたが、 すかさずシャム猫に頬を張られ、身をすくませた。ミミは間を 置かず、手のひらでもう一度相手の鼻先をぶった。
「ちゃんとおとなしく話をお聞き。アホたれ。この腐れキンタマ」とミミは凄みのある声で カワムラさんを怒鳴りつけた。
この子はね、最初にばしっとどやしづけておかないとダメなんですの」とミミはなかたさんの方を振り向き、 弁解するようにいった。「そうじゃないと、緊張がなくなって、ますます変な話し方をするようになってしまうんです。 こんな風になってしまったのも、この子自身のせいじゃありませんし、かわいそうだとは思うんだけど、まあ、仕方が ありませんわね」
「はい」、ナカタさんはわけのわからにまま同意した。
101 The two cats began conversing, but they spok so quickly and softly that Nakata wasn't able to catch any of it. Mimi grilled Kawamura in a sharp tone, to the younger cat replying timidly. Any hesitation got him another merciless slap to the face. This Siamese cat was clever, and educated too. Nakata had met many cats up till this point, but never before one who listened to opera and knew models og cars. Impressed, he watched as Mimi went about her business with a brisk efficiency.
163 それから二匹の猫のあいだにやり取りが始まったが、会話のスピードが速く、声も小さく、ナカタさんはその内容をうまく聞き取る ことが出来なかった。ミミが鋭い声で詰問し、カワムラさんはおどおどした声で答えた。少しでも返事が遅れたりすると、容赦なく平手打ちが飛んだ。 何をするにせよよ、ずいぶん要領を得たシャム猫だ。教養もあり、これまでいろいろな猫に会って話したけれども、車の種類を知っていたり、 オペラを聴いたりする猫なんてはじめてだ。ナカタさんは感心して、その要を得た迅速な仕事ぶりに眺めていた。
Once Mimi had heard everything she wanted to, she chased the younger cat off. "Be on your way!" she said sharply、 and he slunk dejectedly away.
Mimi nestled into Nakata's lap. "I think I've got the gist of it."
"Much obliged," Nakata said.
"That cat-- Kawamura, that is -- said he'd seen Goma several times in a grassy spot just down the road. It's an empty plot pf land they were planning to uild on. A property developer bought up a car company's parts warehouse and tore it down, planning to put up a high-class complex. A citizens's movement's opposed the development, there was some legal battle and the construction's been put on hold. The sort of thing that happens all the time these days. The plot's overgrown with grass and people hardly ever go there. so it's the perfect hangout for all the strays in the neighbourhood. I don't keep comany with many cars, and I don't want to get fleas, so I hardly ever go over there. As you're no doubt aware, fleas are like a bad habit -- awfully hard to get rid of once you get them."
""I see," Nakata said.
slunk dejectedly away = slink = こそこそ歩く。dejectedly = 意気消沈、落胆して。

163 ミミはだいたいの話を聞きだしてしまうと、＜もういいから、あっちへお行き＞と言う感じで、カワムラさんを追い出してしまう。カワムラ さんはすごすごとどこかに消えていった。
ミミはそれから人なつっこくナカタさんの膝に載った。
「おおよそのところはわかりましたよ」とミミは言った。
「はい、どうもありがとうございました」とナカタさんは言った。
「あの子は・・カワムラさんは、三毛のゴマちゃんをこの先にあります草むらでなんどか見かけたようです。建築予定地になっている空地です。 不動産会社が、ある自動車会社のもっていた部品倉庫を買収して、そこに高級高層マンションを建てることを計画していて更地に（さらち）に したのですが、住民の反対運動が強く、ややこしい訴訟なんぞもあり、なかなか工事着工ができないままになっています。昨今よくあるはなしです わね。そこでそこらが草ぼうぼうに茂りまして、普段は人も入ってきませんし、この辺は野良猫たちのかっこうの活動の場となっています。わたしが 交際が広い範囲ではありませんが、ノミのようなものがうつるのも心配ですし、あまりそっちの方にはまいりませんが。おわかりのようにノミという やつは厄介なもので、いちどうつるとなかなかとれません。悪い習慣とおなじですわね」
「はい」とナカタさんは返事をした。
102 "He told me the cat 's just like the one in the photograph--a timid, pretty young tortoseshell with a flea collar. Can't seem to speak that well, either. It is clear to anyone that it's a naive house cat that can't find its way back home."
"When was this, I wonder?"
"The kast time he saw the cat seems to have been theww or four days ago. As he's not so bright, he's not even sure about the days. But he did say it was the day after it rained, so I'm thinking it must have been Monday. I seem to recall it rained around pretty hard on Sunday."

「最後に見かけたのは三日か四日くらい前みたいです。なにしろ頭が悪いので、正確な日にちまではなかなかわかりませんが、でも、雨が降ったあくる日 と言っていました。たぶん月曜日のことだと思います。たちか日曜日にけっこうあめが降ったと私はきおくしているのですが」
102 "Nakata doesn't know about the days of the week, but I think it did rain around then. He hasn't seen her since?"
"That was the last time. The other cats haven't seen her either, he says. He's a spacy, good-for-nothing cat, but I pressed him closely and believe most of what he says."
"I really want to thank you."

「それが最後だったということです。まわりの猫もそれ以来、その三毛猫を見かけていないどうです。ろくでもない頓珍漢な猫ですが、 かなりきつく確かめてみましたので、大筋にまちがいはないと思います」
「ほんとうにありがとうございます」

オオツカさんはもちろん、ナカタさんにも曜日がわからない。ただ、雨が降った日かどうか猫にはわかる。

ところで、ちがごろは暑い日が続くなあ、だんだん知球温暖化が横浜北部のＳ地区にもやってきたのだなあ。緑豊かだったＳ地区の草地や林をどんどん宅地に する相鉄不動産の社長殿、責任を取ってくれ。Ｓ線沿線の人口減少で、電車の定期券利用者が長期低迷傾向とかで、それができないのなら、せめて自社株買いをして、配当を増やせ。
