「あらすじ」
カフカは、朝食の量が少ないのに困惑する。トーストのお代わりはない。カラスと呼ばれる少年はカフカに、胃を慣らすしか仕方がないと言う。
それから、ホテルのフロントで、ＹＭＣＡ経由で予約した安い料金で延長できないかを交渉する。フロントの若い女の子は支配人に相談してみると言う。
その後、ジムをさがし、駅前からバスに乗る。
67 At 7.15 I eat breakfast in the restaurant next to the lobby -- toast, hot milk, ham and eggs. But this free breakfast doesn't come close to filling me up. The food's all gone before you realise it, and I'm still hungry. I look around and second helping of toast soesn't seem likely to materialise. I let out a big sigh.
"Well, what are you doing to do?" the boy named Crow says.
He is sitting aross from me.
"You're not at home any more, where you can stuff yourself with whatever you like," he says. "I mean, you're run away from home, right? Get that into your head. You're used to getting up early and eating a huge breakfast, but those days are long gone, my friend. You'll have to scrape by on what they give you. You know what they saw about how the size of your stomach can adjut to the amount of food you eat? Well, you're about to discover if that's really true. Your stomach's going to get smaller, though that'll taka some time. Think you can handle it?"
* doesn't come close to filling me up = ほとんど食べた気がしない。
come close to doing = しそうになる。 Dirk came close to dspairing in those months of unemployment. 絶望しそうになった。
* second helping of toast soesn't seem likely to materialise. materialize = 実現する。 matelialize one's dream = 夢を実現する。
トーストのお代わりがくる気配は全くない。
* scrape by on ... = やっと切り抜ける。かろうじて・・する。 擦る。 I just scrape by on my pension = 年金で何とか暮らす。
このあたりの「come close to doing」とか 「scrape by on ...」は、個々の単語は見慣れたものだが、成句になるといくつかの意味が分からない。いくつかの辞書を引く。
109 7時15分にはロビーの近くにある食堂で、トーストとホットミルクとハムエッグの朝食を食べる。料金に含まれてた ビジネス・ホテルの朝食は、どう考えても僕には量が少ない。あっという間におなかに収まってしまい、ほとんど食べた気がしない。 思わずあたりを見渡す。でもトーストのお代わりができるような気配はまるでない。僕は溜息をつく。
「しかたがないじゃないか」とカラスと呼ばれる少年が言う。
気がつくと彼はテーブルの向かいの席に座っている。
「君は好きなだけ食べられるという環境にはもういないんだ。なにしろ君は家出をしてきたんだもな。その事実を頭に 叩き込まなくちゃいけないぜ。こまでは朝早く起きて、たっぷりと朝ご飯を食べてきた。でもこれからはそうはいかない。与えられた ものだけでやっていかなくちゃならないんだ。食事の量にあわせて胃は大きさを変えていくという話をどこかで聞いたことがあるだろう。 これから君はたぶん、それが本当なのかどうかをじいっさいに確かめてみることになる。そのうち胃もちいさくなっていくさ。でも それまでに時間はかかる。そういうのに耐えることができるかな？」
68 "Yeah, I can handle it," I reply.
"Good," Crow tells me. "You're supposed to be the toughest 15-year-old on the planet, remember?"
I give him a nod.
"Well, then, how about stop staring at your empty plate and get a move on?"
Following this advice, I stand up and go to the front desk to negotiate over the price of my room. I explain I'm a student at a private high school in Tokyo and I have come here to write my graduation paper. (Which isn't a total lie since the high school affiliated with my school has this kind of set-up.) I add that I'm collectiong material for the paper at the Komura Memoril Library. There's much more to research than I'd imagined so I'll have to stay at least a week in Takamatsu. But since I'm on a budget, would the discounted room rate be possible not just for three days, but for the whole time I'm here? I offer to pay each day in advance, and promise not to be any trouble.

僕はホテルのフロントに行って、宿泊条件に付いて交渉してみる。自分は東京の私立高校生なのだが、卒業レポートを 作成するためにここにきて（僕の通っていた学校の高等部にはじっさいそういう制度があった）、専門資料のある甲村記念図書館に 通っている。調べなくてはならないことが思ったよりたくさんあって、どうみても一週間は高松に宿泊しなければならない。 しかし予算は限られている。だから規定の三泊だけでなく、ここにいる間特別に、ＭＹＣＡを通した安い料金で宿泊させて もらえないだろうか。料金は毎日前日に前払いするし、迷惑はかけないから、と。
68 I stand there in front of the girl in chage, trying to do my best imitation of a nice, well-brought-up young man who's in a tight spot. No dyed hair for me, no piercings. I have on a clean white Ralph Lauren polo shirt, chinos and a pair of brand new Topsiders. My teeth are gleaning and I small like soap and shampoo. I know how to speak polightly. When I feel like it, I'm prerry good at impressing people older than me.

68 The girl listens in silence, nodding, her lips slightly twisted up. She's petite, and wearing green uniform blazer over a whote brouse. She looks a little sleepy, but goes about her morning duties briskly. She's about the same age as my sister.
"I understand," she says, "but I have to clear it with the manager. We should have an answer for you by noon." Her tone is businesslike, but I can tell that, as far as she's concerned, I pass. She writes down my name and room number. I have not idea whether this negotiating well get me anywhere. I might blow up in my face -- if the manager demands to see my student ID, say, or tries to get in touch with my parents. (Of course I gave a false home phone number when I registered.) But seeing as how my funds are limited, I reckon it's worth the risk.

89 I checked the Yellow Pages and call a public gym and ask about their weight machines. They have most of what I need, and it only costs \500 a day. I get directions from the station, thank them and hang up.
I go back to my room for my backpack, then hit the street. I could just leave my stuff in the room, or in the hotel safe, but I feel better carrying it all with me. It's as if it's a part of me already, and I can't let go.
hit the street = 外に出る。

イギリスのある地方都市で、生き倒れになっていた若い女が救貧院に運ばれ、男の子を出産して間もなく死亡する。 オリヴァー・ツイストと名付けられた孤児は、救貧院の朝食のかゆがあまりにもうすいので空腹に耐えられず、 「おかゆの「お代わりを下さい」と言ったら、親方から柄杓で殴られる。・・・
半世紀も前に読んだ小説の一部を思い出す。このシーンだけしか覚えていない。
