「あらすじ」 ナカタさんは、黒猫のオオツカさんにゴマを探していることを告げる。
オオツカさんは、「猫は習慣性の強い動物なので、行方不明になるのは、性欲のためか事故の場合がおおい」 という。
性欲の場合は、そのことしか考えられす自分でもわけのわからない行動をとり、それが過ぎ去るのを待つしか ないと教える。ゴマは見かけたことがないので、別のところが探した方がいい、と助言する。
61 "So right now you're searching for a lost cat?
"Yes, that's correct. Nakata looking for a one-year-old tottoiseshell cat named Goma. Here's a photo of her. Nakata pulled a color copy out of his canvas shoulder bag and showed it to Otuka. "She's wearing a brown flea collar.
Otsuka stretched out to gaze at the photograph, then shook his head.
"No, 'fraid I've never run across this onw. I know most of the cats around here, but this one I don't know. Never seen, or heard, anything about her."
"Is that right?"
"Have you been looking for her for a long time?"
"Well, today is, let me see... one, two, three... the third day."
62 Otsuka sat thinking for a time. "I assume you're aware of this, but cats are creatures of habit. Usually they live very ordered lives, and unless something extraordinary happens they generally try to keep their routine. What might disrupt this is either sex and an accident--one of the two.
"Nakata's thinking the same thing."
"If it's sex, then you have to wait till they get it out of their system and they'll be back. You do understand what I mean by sex."
"I haven't done it myself, but I think I understand. It has to do with your willy, right?"
"That's right. It's all about the willy." Otuga nodded, a serious look on his face. "If we're talking about an accident, though, you might never see her again."
"That's true."
If it's sex, then you have to wait till they get it out of their system and they'll be back.
もしそれが性欲であるならば、行方不明になった猫たちは、しばらくして落ち着けば戻ってくる。

99 「で、今も迷子の猫を探しているんだね？」
「はい、そのとおりであります。いまがしておりますのは一歳の三毛猫で、名前はゴマと申します。ここに写真があります」、ナカタさんは肩にかけていたズックの 鞄からカラーコピーの写真を出して、オオツカさんに見せた。

オオツカさんは首をのばしてその写真を見た。それから首を振った。
「ううむ、こいつは見たことないな。オレはこのあたりにいる猫のことならだいたい全部知っているけど、 これは知らないよ。見たことも・・・きいたこともない」
「そうですか」
「それで、あんた、ずいぶん長くこの猫を探しているのかい？」
「えーと、今日で・・・いち、に、さんと三日目であります」
オオツカさんはしばらく考え込んでおた。それから言った。「あんたも知っているかとは思うけど、 猫というのはね、習慣性のつよい動物なんだ。だいたいにおいて規則正しい生活をしているし、よほどのことが ないかぎり、大きな変化は好まない。よほどのことというのは、性欲か、あるいは事故か、たいていはそのどちらか だね」
「はい。ナカタもだいたいそのように考えております」
「もしそれが性欲であるならば、しばらくしえ落ち着けば戻ってくる。あんた、性欲のことはわかるよな？」」
「はい、経験はありませんが、だいたいのところはつかんでおります。おちんちんのことですか？」
「そうだ、おちんちんのことだ」。オオツカさんは神妙な顔でうなずいた。「しかしもしそれが事故であるならば、戻ってくるのは むずかしい」
「はい、その通りです」
62 "Also, sometimes when a cat's on the prowl for sex it might wander off and have trouble finding its way home again."
"If Nakata went out of Nakata ward, finding my way home wouldn't be easy."
"That happened to me a few times. 'Course that was a long time ago, when I was much younger," Otuka said, eyes narrowed as he search his memory. "Once you're lost, you panic. You're in total despair, not knowing what to do. I hate it when that happens. Sex can be a real pain that way, 'cause when you get in the mood all you can think about it what't right under your nose-- that's sex, all right. So that cat--what was her name? The one that's lost?"
"Do you mean Goma?"

そのときには、あとさきのことなんてなにも考えられないんだ。
on the prowl for sex = 性欲に駆られて遠くまでふらつく。 prowl = こそこそうろつく。 rrowl around the shops = 店を見て回る。
sex = 性欲、性的衝動、性行動。外陰部。
101 「オレもね、何度かそういうことああった。もちろんずっと若いときのことだけどな」とオオツカ 三は思い出すように目を細めて言った。「いったん帰り道がわからなくなると、パニックになる。目の前が 真っ黒になる。何が何だかわからなくなってしまう。あれはいやなものなんだ。性欲というものは、まったく 困ったものなんだ。でもそのときには、とにかくそのことしか考えられない。それが・・・性欲ってもんだ。 だから、その、なんていったけな、いなくなった猫の名前は？」
「ゴマでありますか」
62 "Yes, of couese, Goma. I'd like to do what I can do to help uou find her. A younger tortoiseshell cat like that, with some nice family taking care of her, wouldn't know the first thing about making her way in the world. Wouldn't be able to fight off anybody or fend for herself, the poor things. Unfortunately, however, I've never seen her. I think you might want to search somewher else. "
"Well, then, I suppose, I should follow your advice and go to some other place to look. Nakata's very sorry to have interrupt your nap. I'm sure I'll stop by here again sometime, so if you spot Goma in the meantime, please let me lnow. I'd like to give you something for your help.
「そう、そのゴマのことも、オレとしては、なんとか見つけだして助けてやりたいと思うよ。どっかの家で 大事に扱われていた一歳の三毛猫なんて、世の中のことは何も知りゃしない。喧嘩のひとつもできないし、飯だって 自分じゃ見つけられない。かわいそうなもんだ。でも残念ながらその猫はにかけたことがない。別の場所をあたって 見た方がいいと思うね」
「そうですか。それではおっしゃる通り、別の本面を当たってみることにいたします。オオツカさんのお昼寝を おじゃまして、大変申し訳ありませんでした。そのうちにまたこのへんで立ち寄ることがあると思いますので、もし それまでにゴマの姿をみかけたら、ナカタにぜひおしえてください。失礼かもしれませんが、できる限りのお礼は いたします。」
