「あらすじ」 ナカタさんが登場する。あのお椀山でキノコ採りの途中で倒れ意識を失い、甲府の大学病院から陸軍病院へ連れ去られた少年は、 記憶が失われ、文字が読めなくなってしまった。なぜか自分の影が薄くなり、半分が失われてしまったようだ。 今では老人になった。ナカタさんは、猫と会話ができる。
57 "Hello there," the old man called out.
The large, elderly black tomcat raised its head a fraction and wearily returned the greeting in a low voice.
"A very nice spell of weather we're having."
"Um," the cat said.
"Not a cloud in the sky."
"... for the time being."
"Is the weather going to take the turn for the worse, then?"
"It feel like it'll cloud up towards evening." The black cat slowly stretched out a leg, then narrowed its eyes and gave the old man another good long look.
With a big grin on his face, the man stared right back. The cat hesitated for a time, then plunged ahead and spoke. "Hum...so you're able to speak."
"That's right," the old man said bashfully. "Not that I can converse with every cat I meet, but if things go well I can. As right now."

92 「こんにちは」とその初老の男が声をかけた。
猫は少しだけ顔をあげ、低い声でいかにも大儀そうに挨拶をかえした。年老いた大きな雄猫 だった。
「なかなか良いお天気でありますね」
「ああ」と猫は言った。
「雲ひとつありません」
「・・・今のところはね」
「お天気は続きませんか？」
「夕方あたりからくずれそうだ。そういう気配がするな」と黒猫はもぞもぞと片足をのばし ながら言った。それから目を細め。あらためて男の顔を眺めた。
男はこにこ微笑みながら猫を見ていた。
猫はどうしたものかと少しのあいだ迷っていた。それからあきらめたように言った。
「ふん、あんたは・・・しゃべれるんだ」
「はい」と老人は恥ずかしそうに言った。「いつでも、どのような猫さんとしゃべれると いうのではありませんが、いろいろなことがうまくいけば、なんとかこのようにお話する ことができます」
57 "Interesting," the cat said simply.
"Do you mind if I sit down here for a while? Nakata's a little tire from walking."
The black cat rose languishedly it its feet, whiskers atwitch, and yarned so tremendously that its jaw looked almost unhinged. "I don't mind. Or perhaps I should say it's not up to me. You can sit anywhere you like. Nobody's going to bother you for that."
"Thank you kindly," the man said, lowering himself down besides the cat. "Boy or boy, I've been on the move since six this morning."
"Um,.. I take it, then, that you're Mr Makata?"
"That's right. Nakata's the name. And you would be?"
"I forgot my name," the cat said. "I had one, I know did, but somewhere along the line I didn't need ant more. So it's slipped my mind."
"I know. It's easy to forgot things you don't need any more. Nakata's exactly the same way," the man said, you don't belong to some family somewhere?"
"A long time ago I did. But not any more. Some families in the neibourhood give me food to eat now and then, but none of them own me."

93 「ふん」と猫は簡潔に感想を述べた、
「あの、ここにちょっと腰をおろしてかまいませんか？ ナカタはいささか歩き疲れましたので」
黒猫はゆっくりと身体を起し、長いひげを何度かぴくぴくと動かし、顎がはずれてしまいそうな くらい大きなあくびをした。「かまわないよ。というか、かまうもかまわないも、好きなところに すわればいい。それについちゃ誰も文句はいわないよ」
「ありがとうございます」と言って男は猫の隣に腰を下ろした。「いやいや、朝の6時すぎから ずっと歩いておりました」
「えーっと、それで、あんたは・・ナカタさんっていうんだね」
「そうです、ナカタともうします。猫さん、あなたは？」
「名前は忘れた」と黒猫は言った。「まったくなかったわけじゃないんだが、途中からそんなもの 必要もなくなってしまったもんだから、忘れた」
「はい、必要のないものはすぐ忘れるものであります。それはナカタも同じであります」と男は 頭を掻きながら言った。「と言いますと、猫さんはどこかのお宅で飼われているんじゃないんですね」
「昔はたしか飼われていたことがあった。でも今は違う。近所のいくつかの家でときたまご飯は もらっているけど・・・飼われちゃいない」
58 Nakata nodded and was silent for a time, then, said, "Would you mind very much, then, if I called you you Otsuka?"
"Otsuka?" the cat said, looking at him in surprise. "What are you talking about? Why do I have to be Otsuka?"
"No special reason. The name just came to me. Nakata just picked one out of a hat. It makes things a loot easier for me if you have a name. That way somebody like me, who isn't bright, can organise things better. For instance, I can say 'On this day of this month I spoke with the black cat Otsuka in a vacant plot of land in the 2-chome neighbourhood.' I jelps me remember."
"Interesting," the cat said. "Not that I totally follow you. Cats can get by without names. We go by smell, shape, things of nature. As long as we know, there's no worries for us."
"Nakata understands completely. But But you know, Mr Otsuka, people don't work that way. We need dates and names to remember all kinds of things."
The cat gave a snort. "Sounds like a pain to me."
"You're absolutely right. There's so much we have to remember, it is a pain. Nakata has to remember the name of the Governor, bus numbers. Still, you don't mind if I call you Otsuka? Maybe it's a little unpleasant for you?"
"Well, now that you mention it, I suppose it isn't all that pleasant...Not that it's particularly unpreasant, you understand. So I guess, I don't really mind. You want to call be Otuska, be my guest. All the same, it doen't sound right when you call me that."
"Nakata's very happy to hear you say that. Thank yu very much. Mr. Otsuka."

95 ナカタさんはうなずいて、しばらく黙っていた。それから言った、「それで猫さんのことを、オオツカさんと 呼んでよろしいでしょうか？」
「オオツカ？」と猫はちょっとびっくりして相手の顔を見つめた。「なんだい、それは？ どうしておれが・・・オオツカなんだい？」
「いいえ、大した意味はありません。ナカタが今ふと思いついただけであります。名前がないと覚えるのに困りますので、 適当な名前をつけただけであります。名前があるのとなにかと便利なのであります。そうするとたとえば、何月何日の午後＊＊二丁目の空き地で 黒猫のオオツカさんと出会ってはなしをしたという具合に、ナカタのように頭の悪い人間にも、ものごとがわかりやすく整理することができます。 そうすれば覚えやすくなります」
「ふん」と黒猫は言った。「よくわからないな。猫にはそんなの必要ない。匂いとかかたちとか、ただあるものを受けいればいいだけだ。それで とくに不自由はないね」
「はい、それはナカタもよくわかっております。しかしオオツカさん、人間はそうではありません。いろいろなことを覚えておくためには、 日付とか名前がどうしても必要になって参ります」
猫は鼻息を立てた。「不便なもんだね」
「その通りであります。覚えなくちゃならないことが多いというのは、まったく不便なものであります。ナカタにしたところで、知事さんの 名前だって覚えなくてはなりませんし、バスの番号だって覚えねければなりません。しかし、それはともかくといたしまして、猫さんをオオツカ さんとよんでかまいませんでしょうか？ ひょっとしてご不快でありましょうか？」
「愉快かときかれれば、そんなに愉快でもないけど・・・、かといってとくに不快でもない。だからべつに構わないよ、オオツカさんで。 もしそう呼びたいのであれば呼べばいい。なんだかその、自分のことじゃない気がするけど」
「そう言っていただけるなら、ナカタも大変うれしくあります。たいへんありがとうございます、オオツカさん」

あのお椀山のキノコ採りで、記憶を失い甲府大学から陸軍病院に移された少年は、ナカタさんだった。 ナカタさんに何があったのだろうか。
子どもたちをお椀山に引率した女教師は太平洋戦争で、新婚早々に夫を南方も島でなくす。あとの章でお椀山のナカタさんとの出来事をその生理と心理を告白する。
記憶を失くしたナカタさんは迷い猫を探す生活をしている。不思議な予知能力をもちその後、奇妙な縁でカフカの父・カフカの母と巡り合う。
