「あらすじ」
カフカは高松駅前から、二両連結の小さな電車で「甲村記念図書館」に向かう。線路は海沿いにしばらく走ってから内陸に入る。
42 The train is just two small carriages couoled together. The tracks cut through a high-rise shopping district, then past a mix of small shops and houses, factories and warehouses. Next comes a park and an apartment building under construction. I press my face against the window, drinking in the unfamiliar sights. I've hardly even been outside Tokyo, and everything looks fresh and new. The train I'm on, going out of townm is nearly empty this time of the morning, but the platforms on the other side are packed with junior and senior high school kids in summer uniforms, school bags slung across their shoulders. All heading to school. Not me, though, I'm alone, going in the oppesite direction. We're on differnet tracks in more way than one. All of a sudden the air feels thin and something heavy is bearing down on my chest. Am I really doing the right things? The thought makes me feel helpless, isolated. I turn my back on the schoolkids and try not to look at them any more.

70 二両連結の小さな電車だ。線路はビルの並んだ繁華街を抜け、小さな商店と住宅が入り混じった区域を抜け、工場や倉庫の前を通り過ぎる。 公園があり、マンションに建築現場がある。僕は窓に顔をつけ、知らない土地の風景を熱心に眺める。何もかもが僕の目には新鮮にうつる。僕は これまで東京以外の町の風景をほとんど見たことがない。朝の下りの電車がガラガラにすいているが、反対側のホームにはカバンを肩にかけ、 夏の制服をきた中学生や高校生たちが鈴なりになっている。彼らはこれから学校に行こうとしているのだ。僕は違う。僕は独りぼっちで彼らとは 逆の方向に向かっている。僕はかれらとはちがうレールの上に乗っている。
42 The train runs bside the sea for a time, then cuts inland. We pass tall field of corn, grape vines, tangerine trees growing on the terraced hills. An occasional irrigation pond sparkles in the sunlight. A river winding through a flat stretch of land looks cool and inviting, an empty lot is overgrown with summer grasses. At one point we pass a dog standing by the tracks, staring vacantly at the trainrushing by. Watching this scenary makes me feel warm and calm all over again. You're going to be OK, I tell myself. taking a deep breath. All you can do is forge on ahead.
tangerine tree = ミカン。

70 線路は海沿いにしばらく走ってから内陸に入る。高く茂ったトウモロコシの畑があり、葡萄畑があり、 傾斜地を利用したみかんの畑がある。ところどころに灌漑用の池があり、朝の光を反射させている。平地を曲がり くねって流れる川の水は涼しげで、空地は緑の夏草に覆われている。犬が線路の脇に立って、通り過ぎる電車を 見ている。そういう風景を眺めていると、僕の心にもう一度暖かく穏やかな思いが戻ってくる。大丈夫だ。 僕は大きく深呼吸をしてから自分にそう言い聞かせる。このまま前に進んでいくしかないんだ。
43 At the station I follow the map and walk north pass rows of old shop and houses. Both side of the street are lined with walls around people's homes. I'd never seen so many different kinds-- black walls made out of boards, white walls, granite-block walls, stone walls with hedge on top. The whole place is still and silent, with no one else on the street. Hardly any cars pass by. The air smells like the sea, which must be nearby. I listen carefully but can't hear any waves. Far offm though, I hear the faint beelike buss of an electric saw, maybe from a construction site. Small sign arrows pointing toward the library line the road from the station, so I can't get lost.

71 駅を出で、教えられた通り古い街並みを北に向かって歩く。道の両側には塀がどこまでも続いている。 1そんんなにたくさんの、いろんな種類の塀を目にしたのは生まれて初めてだ。黒い板塀、白壁の塀、御影石を 積んだ塀、石垣の上に植え込みのある塀。あたりはひっそりとしていて、歩いている人の姿もない。車もほとんど とおりかからない。空域を吸いこむとかすかに海の匂いがする。きった海岸がちかいのだろう。耳を澄ませてみるが、 波の音は聞こえない。どこか遠くで建築工事をしているらしく、電動のこぎりの音が蜂の羽根のように小さく聞こえる。 駅から図書館まで、矢印のついた小さい案内板がところどころに出ているので、道に迷うことはない。
43 Right in front of the Komura Memorial Library's imposing front gate stand two neatly trimmed plum trees. Inside the gate a gravel path winds past other beautifully manicured bushes and trees--pines and magnolias, kerria and azaleas--with not a fallen leaf in sight. A couple of stone lanterns peek out between the trees, as does a small pond. Finally, I got to the intricately designed entrance. I come to a halt in front of the open front door, hesitating for a moment about going inside. This place doesn't look like any library I've ever seen. But having come all this way I might as well take the plunge. Just inside the entrance a young man is sitting behind a counter where you check your bags. I slough off my backpack, then take off my sunglasses and cap.

甲村記念図書館の堂々とした門の手前には、清楚なかたちをした梅ノ木が二本生えている。 門を入ると曲がりくねった砂利道がつづき、庭の樹木は美しく手が入れられて、落ち葉ひとつ ない。松と木蓮、山吹、ツツジ。植え込みのあいだに大きな古い灯篭がいくつかあり、小さな 池も見える。やがて玄関に着く。 とても凝ったつくりの玄関だ。僕は開いた戸の前にたちど まり、中に入ろうかどうしようか少しのあいだ迷う。それは僕の知っているどんな図書館とも 違っている。でもわざわざ訪ねて来たのだから、やはり入らないわけにはいかない。玄関を 入ってすぐのところにカウンターがあり、そこに座っていた青年が荷物を預かってくれる。 僕はリュックをおろし、サングラスをとり帽子をとる。
44 "Is this your sirst visit?" he asks me in a relaxed, quiet voice. It's slightly high-pitched, but smooth and soothng.
I nod, but the words come. The question takes me by surprise and I make me a kind of tense.
I long, freshly sharpened pencil between his fingers, the young man studies my face for a while. The pencil is yellow, with a rubber at the end. The man's face is on the small side, his features regular. Pretty, rather than handsome, might describes him best.
He's wearing a buttonned down white cotton shirt and olive green chinos, with not a shingle whincle on either. When he looks down his longish hair falls over his brow, and occasionally he notices this and finger it back. His sleeves are rolled up to the elboww, realing slender white wrists. Delicately framed glasses nicely complement his features. The small plastic name tag pinned to his chest says "Oshima". Not exactly the type of librarian I'm used to.

72 「ここに来るのは初めて？」と彼はたずねる。リラックスした静かな声だ。どちらかというと高い声だが、 滑らかで、耳障りなところは全くない。
僕はうなずく。声がうまく出てこない。僕は緊張している。そんな質問をされるとはまったく予期していな かった。
彼は長い削りたての鉛筆を指のあいだにはさんだまま、僕の顔をひとしきり興味深そうに眺める。消しゴムの ついた黄色い鉛筆だ。小柄な整った顔出ちの青年だった。ハンサムというよりは、むしろ美しいといった方が近いかもしれない。 白いコットンのボタンダウンの長袖のシャツを着て、オリーブ・グリーンのチノパンをはいている。どちらも皺ひとつない。 髪の毛は長めで、うつむくと前髪が額に落ちて、ときどき思い出したように手で救い上げる。シャツの袖が ひじのところまで折られていて、ほっそりした白い手首が見える。細くて繊細なフレームのメガネが顔のかたちに よく似合っている。胸に「大島」と書かれた小さなプラスティックの札をつけている。彼は僕の知っている どんな図書館員ともちがっている。
