「あらすじ」
その後、朝食に立ち寄ったお店でうどんを食べる。いわゆる讃岐うどんらしい。その描写がいい（と、讃岐うどんがフアンのこの本の鑑賞者＝わたしは思う）。
いつか雑誌『太陽』で見た私立図書館を思い出し、観光案内書で行き方を教えてもらう。
40 I have a reservation at a business hotel in Takamatsu. The MYCA in Tokyo had told me about the place, and through them I got a discount on the room. But that's only for the first three days, then, it goes back to the normal room rate.
If I really wanted to save money I could just sleep on a bench in front of the station, or since it's still warm out, I could stop in my sleeping bag in a park some where. But then the police will come and check my ID-- the one thing I have to avoid at all costs. That's why I went for the hotel reservation, at least for three days. After that I'll work some thing out.

67 僕は前もって高松市内のビジネス・ホテルを予約しておいた。東京のMYMCAに電話をかけて、そのホテルを紹介してもらった。YMCAを通すと 料金が特別に安くなるということだった。ただしそのサービス料金は三泊で終わってしまう。そのあとは普通の料金を支払わなくてはならない。
費用を節約しようと思えば、駅のベンチで寝ることだってできた。寒い季節じゃないし、用意した寝袋をどこかの公園に広げて寝てもいい。 しかしそういうところを警察に見つけられたら、きっと身分証明書を見せろと言われるだろう。僕としては何があろうとそんな目にだけはあいたく なかった。だからとりあえず最初の三日はホテルを予約した。そのあとのことはまたあとで考えればいい。
40 At the station I nip into the first little cafe that catches my eye, and eat my fill of udon. Born and raised in Tokyou, I haven't had much udon in my life. But now I'm in Udon Central -- Shiloku-- and confronted with noodles like nothing I've ever seen. They're chewy and fersh, and the soup smells so great, really fragrant. And talk about cheap. It all tastes so good I order seconds, and for the first time in who know how long, I'm happily stuffed. Afterwords I plop my self down on a bench in the plazza next to the station and gaze up at the sunny sky. I'm free, I reminded myself. Like the clouds floating across the sky, I'm all by myself, totally free.

67 駅の近くにあるうどん屋に入って腹ごしらえをする。見まわしてたまたま目についたところに入っただけだ。僕は東京で生まれ 育ったから、うどんというものはほとんど食べたことがない。しかしそれは僕がこれまで食べたどんなうどんともちがっている。 腰が強く、新鮮で、だしも香ばしい。値段もびっくりするほど安い。あまりうまかったのでおかわりをする。おかげで久しぶりに 満腹になり、幸福な気持ちになる。それから、駅前の広場のベンチに座り、晴れあがった空を見上げる。僕は自由なのだと思う。 僕はここにいて、空を流れる雲のように一人ぼっちで自由なのだ。
41 I decided to kill time till the evening at a library. Ever since I was little I've loved to spend time in the reading rooms of the libraries, so I've come to Takamatsu armed with info. on all the libraries in and around the city. Think about it--a little kid who doesn't want to go home doesn't have many places he can go. Coffee shops and cinemas are off-limits. That leaves only libraries, and they're perfect-- no entrance fee, nobody getting all hot and bothered if a young boy come in.

68 図書館で夕方まで時間をつぶすことにする。高松市の近辺にどんな図書館があるのか、あらかじめ調べておいた。小さいころから 僕はいつも図書館の読書室で時間をつぶしていた。小さな子供が家に帰りたくないとおもったとき、行ける場所は限られている。 喫茶店の入れないし映画館にも入れない。残された場所は図書館しかない。入場料はいらないし、子どもがひとりで入っても文句はいわれない。
41 You just sit down and read whatever youn want. I always rode my bike to the local public library after school. Even on holodays that's where you'd find me. I'd devour anything and everything -- novels, biographies, histories, whatever was lying around. Once I'd going through all the children's book, I went to the general stacks and books for adults. I might not always get much out of them, but I forged on to the last page. When I got tired of reading I'd go into one of those listening booths with headphones and enjoy some music. I had no idea about music so I just wend down the row of CDs they had there, giving them all a listen. That's how I got to know about Duke Ellington, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

68 椅子に座って好きなだけ本が読める。学校からかえると僕は自転車で近所の区立図書館に行った。休みの日も多くの時間を そこでひとりで過ごした。物語や小説や伝記や歴史、そこにある本を手当たり次第に読んだ。子ども向けの本をひととおり読んでしまうと、 一般向けの書架（しょか）に移って、大人のための本を読んだ。よく理解できない本でもとにかく最後のページまで読み通した。本を 読むのに疲れてると、ヘッドフォンのあるブースに座って音楽を聴いた。音楽についての知識はまったきなかったから、そこにあるものを 右から順番にひとつひとつ聴いていった。僕はそのようにしてヂューク・エリントンやビートルズやレッド・ツエッペリンの音楽に 巡り合った。
41 The library was like a second home. Or maybe more like a real home than the place I lived in. By going every day I got to know all the lady librarians who worked thee. They knew many name and always said hi. I was painfully shy, though, and could scarecely reply.
Before coming to Takamatsu I found out that some welthy man from an old family in the suburbs had refurbished his personal library into a private library open to the public. The place has a lot of rare books, and I heard the building itself and surrounding garden were worth checking out. I saw a photo of the place once in the Taiyou magazine. It's a large, Japanese-style house with this really elegant reading room that looks more like a parlour, when people are sitting with their books on comfortable-looking dosa. For some eason that photo really stayed with me, and I if some day the chance came along. The Komura Memorial Library, the place was called.
I go over to the tourist-information booth at the station and ask how to het there. A pleasant middle-aged lady marks the spot on a tourist map and gives me instraction on which train to take. It's about a 20 minutes ride, she explains. I thanks her and study the timetable posted inside the station. Trains run about every 20 minytes. I have some time, so I pick up a takeaway lunch at one of the little sops.

69 図書館は僕の第二の家のようなものだった。というかじっさいには、むしろ図書館の方が僕にとって本当の我が家だったかもしれない。 毎日のようにそこに通っているうちに、司書の女性たちとすっかり顔見知りになった、彼女たちは僕の名前を覚え、顔を合わせれば挨拶をし、 温かい言葉をかけてくれた。僕はひどい恥ずかしやなのでろくに返事もしなかったけど。
高松市郊外には、旧家のお金持ちが自宅の書庫を改築してつくった私立図書館がある。珍しい蔵書もそろっているし、建物も庭も一見 の価値があるということだった。その図書館を雑誌『太陽』の写真で見たことがある。古い大きな日本家屋で、応接室のような優雅な閲覧室が あり、ゆったりとしたソファーに座って人々が本を読んでいた。その写真を見たとき、僕は不思議なほど強く心を惹かれた。そしていつかもし 機会があればぜひこの図書マンを訪ねてみようと思った。「甲村（こうむら）記念図書館」というのが図書館の名前だった。
駅の観光案内所へいって、甲村図書館をたずねる。カウンターにつ割っていた親切な中年の女性が僕に観光地図をくれ、図書館の有る場所に ×をつけ、電車の乗り方を教えてくれる。その駅までは電車で２０分ばかりかかるということだ。僕はお礼を言い、駅の時刻表を調べてみる。 電車はだいたい２０分に一本運行している。電車が来るまでまだ少し時間があったので、昼ご飯になりそうな簡単な弁当を駅の売店で買う。
