ロバート・オコンネル少尉は、お椀山で気を失った子供たちを処置した内科医、中沢重一（５３歳）に インタービューをする。
「その中にひとりだけ、どうしても意識を回復できなった男の子がいました。疎開してきた東京の子どもで、 名前はナカタサトルと言いました」
30 The following is a taped interview with Dr Juich Nakazawa(53), who ran an internal medicine clinic in [deleted] town at the time of the incident.
Impressions of the interviewer, Lt Robert O'Connor:
"Dr Juich Nakazawa is so big-boned and dark-skinned he looks more like a farm foreman than a doctor. He has a calm manner but is very brisk and concise and says exactly what's on his mind. Behind his glasses his eyes have a very sharp, alert look, and his memory seems reliable."

「中沢医師は大柄な体型と日焼けした顔のせいで、医師というよりはむしろ農場監督のような 印象を人に与える。人当たりは穏やかだが、しゃべり方はきびきびとして簡潔である。素直に 思ったことを口にする。眼鏡の奥にある眼光は鋭い。記憶力は確かなものであるようだ」

30 That's correct--at 11 a.m. on Nevenver 7, 1944, I received a phone call from the assistat principal at the local elementary school. I used to be the school doctor, or something close to it, so that's why they contacted me.
The assitant principal was terribly upset. He told me that an entire class had lost consciousness while on an outing in the hills to pick mushrooms. According to him they were totally unconscious. Only the teacher in charge had remained conscious, and she's run back to school for help just then. She was so flustered I couldn't wholly grasp the situation, but one fact did come through loud and clear: 16 children has collapsed in the woods.

52 はい、私は1944年11月7日の午前11時過ぎに、町立国民学校の教頭先生から呼び出しの電話 を受けました。以前から学校の嘱託医のようなことをして下りましたので、私のところにまず 連絡があったわけです。ひどい慌てようでした。
ある学級の全員が山にキノコ取りにいって、その場で意識を失ってしまっているのだという 話です。まったく意識がないらしい。引率していった担任の女教師だけが意識を失わずにいて、 助けを求めにひとりで山を下り、ついさっき学校に戻ってきた。しかしずいぶん取り乱しているので、 説明を聞いても何が何だか事情がよくわからない。ひとつ確かなのは、山の中でまだ16人の子供が 倒れたままだということです。
31 The kids were out picking mushrooms, so of course my first thought was that they'd eaten some poisonous ones and been paralyzed. If that were the case it'd be difficult to treat. Differnt varieties of mushrooms have differnet toxcity levels, and the treatmens vary. The most we could do at the moment would be to bump out their stomach. In the case of highly toxic varieties, though, the poison might enter the bloodstream quickly and we might be too late. Around here, several people a year die from poison mushrooms.
I stuffed some emergency medical kit in my bag and rode my bike over to the school as fast as I could. The police had been cantacted and two policemen were already there. We knew we had to had to get the unconscious kids back to town and would need all the help we could get. Most of the young men were away at war, though, so we set off with the best we had-- myself, the two policemen, an elderly male teacher, the assistant principal, the school janitor. And of course the hoemroom teacher wou'd been with the kids. We gathered whatever bicicles we could find, but ther weren't enough so some of us rode two to a bike.

52 キノコ採りにいったということですから、毒キノコでも食べて神経が麻痺したのではないかと ます考えました。そうなると話は大変です。キノコの種類によってひとつひとつ毒性も違いますし、 それに対する処方も違います。私たちにとりあえずできるのは、胃の中にあるものを全部吐かせて、 洗浄することくらいです。しかしそれが毒性の強いもので、消化がかなり進んでいる場合には ての打ちようがありません。この地方では毎年何人かがキノコで命を落とします。
私はとりあえず緊急の役に立ちそうな薬品をあるだけ鞄に詰め込み、すぐに自転車で学校に 駆けつけました。学校には連絡を受けた警察官二人が来ていました。子どもたちの意識がないとなると、 町まで運んでこなくてはなありません。人手がいります。しかし戦時中でしたから、若い男の 大方は兵隊に取られてしまっています。私とその啓作館たちと、年配の男の先生と、教頭と校長と、 用務員、それから担任の若いい女の先生とで山に向かいました。その辺にもある自転車をかき集め、 数が足りない分は二人乗りで行きました。

「森の中には何時ごろついたのですか」
31 It was 11:55. I remember since I happened to glance at my watch when we got there. We rode our bicycles to the bottom of the hill, as far as we could go, then climbed the rest of the way on foot.
By the tome I arrived several of the children had partially regained consciousness. Three or for of them, as I recalled. They weren't fully conscious, though-- sort of dizzily on all fours. The rest of the children were still unconscious. After a while some of the others began to come around, their bodies undulating like so many big worms. It was a very strange sight. The children had collapsed in an odd, flat, open space in the woods where it looked like all the trees had been neatly removed, with autumn sunlight shining down brightly. And here you had, in this spot oor at the edges of it, sixteen elementary schoolkids scattered about prostrate on the ground, some of them starting to move, some of them completely still. The whole thing reminded me of some weird avantgarde play.

53 そのとき時計を見て時刻をたしかめたのをよく覚えています。11時55分でした。山の入り口 あたりの、行けるところまでは自転車で行きまして、それからあとは登山道を駆けるようにして登り 増した。
わたしがそこに着いたとき、何人かの子供たちはもうある程度意識を回復して起き上がっていました。 何人くらい？ 3人か4人か、そんなもんです。起き上がるといっても、回復の具合はまだ十分ではなく、 ふらふらと身体を起こし、四つん這いになって地面に手をついているという感じでした。しかし、そのうち 何人かは、やはり意識を回復しつつあるらしく、まるで大きな虫のように身体をゆっくりとうねらせて 動き始めていました。ずいぶん異様な光景でした。子どもたちが倒れていたのは、森の中の奇妙に平に 開けた場所で、そこだけ切り取られたかのように、秋の太陽の光が明るく射しこんでいました。そしてその中に、 あるいはその周辺に、16人の小学生がそれぞれの姿勢で倒れています。あるものは動き、あるものはじっとした ままです。まるで前衛的な芝居の場面を見ているようでした。
32 For a moment I forgot that I was supposed to be treating the kids and just stood there, frozen, staring at the scene. Not just myself-- everyone in the rescue group reacted the same, paralyzed for a while by what they saw. This might be a strange way of putting it, perhaps, but it was like some mistake bad occured that allowed us to see a sight people should never see. It was wartime, and I was always mentally prepared, as a physicain, to deal with whatever came, in the remote possibility that something awful would occur way out here in the country. Prepared as a citizen of Japan to calmly do my duty if the need arose. But when I saw this scene in the woods I lererally froze.

54 私は自分が医師としてなすべきことも忘れて、息をのみ、しばしその場に立ちすくんでしまいました。 私だけではありません。そこにやってきた全員が多かれ少なかれそういう一時的な麻痺状態に陥ってしまった ようでした。妙な表現ですが、普通の人間が目にはしてはならないものを、何かの手違いでこうして目の前に してしまっているような、そんな気さえしました。戦時中でしたから、このような田舎でありましても、私たち は医師として常にいざというときに備えておりました。たとえどんなことが起こっても、一人の国民として 落ち着いて自分の職責を果たさなければならないと。しかしその情景は文字通り私を凍りつかせてしまいました。
