場面： 二人の道化が教会の庭で自殺したオフィーリアの墓穴を掘っている。
キリスト教では、自殺は禁止されているので、一般には自殺者は正式の埋葬はされないが、 オフィーリアは高貴（デンマーク王の宰相）の娘なので、例外扱いなのだと道化たちは話し合う。
First Clown：
I like thy wit well, in good faith: the gallows
does well; but how does it well? it does well to
those that do in: now thou dost ill to say the
gallows is built stronger than the church: argal,
the gallows may do well to thee. To't again, come.
道化１：
いいこというじゃねえか、絞首台はいい。だが絞首台はどうしていいかわかるか？ 悪いことをする奴にはいい道具なんだぞ。おめえはどうだ、絞首台のほうが教会 よりも頑丈につくられるってわけだろう、こんな言いぐさは悪いことだ。しかるがゆえに、 公私大はおめえにはいい道具だろうよ。もういちど、やりなおしてみな。
Second Clown：
'Who builds stronger than a mason, a shipwright, or
a carpenter?'
道化２：
舟や家を作る大工よりもっと丈夫なものをつくるやつ、だれだか？
First Clown：
Ay, tell me that, and unyoke.
道化１：
そうさ、やすやす答えられたら休ませてやるぜ。
Second Clown：
Marry, now I can tell.
道化２：
うーん、わかったぞ。
First Clown：
To't.
道化１：
いってみな。
Second Clown：
Mass, I cannot tell.
道化２：
うーん、やっぱしちがうなあ。
Enter HAMLET and HORATIO, at a distance
（ハムレット、ホレーシオが離れたところに登場））
First Clown：
Cudgel thy brains no more about it, for your dull
ass will not mend his pace with beating; and, when
you are asked this question next, say 'a
grave-maker: 'the houses that he makes last till
doomsday. Go, get thee to Yaughan: fetch me a
stoup of liquor.
cudge = こん棒で叩く、殴る。
stoop = pronounced like "stoop"; a flagon containing two quarts;
flagon = 大型酒瓶。 quart = クオート＝２ pints = 0.94 L.
道化１：
ま、その木偶（でぐ）頭を絞ったってないいにもでてきやあしめえ、木偶（でぐ）の 馬の手綱をしぼったって走り出すこたあねえからな。今度そう聞かれたらな、墓掘りって 答えな。「墓掘り」がつくる家は最期の日までもつだろうが。さあ、ヨーンの店に行って 酒を買ってきな。

He digs and sings
In youth, when I did love, did love,
Methought it was very sweet,
To contract, O, the time, for, ah, my behove,
O, methought, there was nothing meet.
（掘りながら歌う）
若いころは惚れたこともあったぜ。
甘ずっぱい気になったこともあるぜ。
惚れて焦がれてやせるおもいをしたに
すっぱい女（あま）だぜ ままならぬ
HAMLET：
Has this fellow no feeling of his business, that he
sings at grave-making?
feeling of his business = response to the sombre nature of his job.
ハムレット：
この男、自分の仕事がわかっているのかな、墓を掘りながらも鼻歌まじりとは。
HORATIO:
Custom hath made it in him a property of easiness.
in him a property of easiness = natural to him to carry out his distressing task without any painful sensation.
ホレーシオ：
週間のせいでこういうことも気楽にやれるのでしょう。
HAMLET:
'Tis e'en so: the hand of little employment hath
the daintier sense.
hath the daintier sense = is more fastidious.
ハムレット：
そうらしい。使われぬ手をほど傷つきやすいからな。
First Clown：
[Sings]
But age, with his stealing steps,
Hath claw'd me in his clutch,
And hath shipped me intil the land,
As if I had never been such.
Throws up a skull
道化１：
（歌う）
年をとるのはあわれなもんだぜ。
とりつかれたらもうおしめえだぜ。
あがき羽ばたきのがれようとしたのに
疲れた鳥だぜ ままならぬ
（頭蓋骨を放り出す）
HAMLET:
That skull had a tongue in it, and could sing once:
how the knave jowls it to the ground, as if it were
Cain's jaw-bone, that did the first murder! It
might be the pate of a politician, which this ass
now o'er-reaches; one that would circumvent God,
might it not?
ハムレット：
あの骸骨に舌があり、むかしはうたを歌うことができたはずだ。それがどうだ、地面に叩きつけられるとは。カインの 兄弟を打ち殺した時に使ったロバの骨同様の扱われようではないか。あれだって むかしは権謀策術に富む頭だったかもしれぬ、それがロバみたいな阿呆にいいように あしらわれているのだ、かつては神を欺くほどの策謀家だったかもしれぬのに。
HORATIO：
It might, my lord.
ホレーシオ：
かもしれませんな。
