「あらすじ」
国民学校の教師、岡持節子（２６歳）は、課外学習で子供たちと「おわん山」にキノコ採りに 出かける。空高くに、B-29と思われる飛行機が飛んでいた。
あまり気にせずに、お椀山に入りキノコ採りを始める。数分後に子供たちがつぎつぎと倒れ始める。
"It was soon after you observed the airplane-like object that you went into the woods, correct?"
「飛行機らしきものを目撃したあと、まもなくして全員で森に入ったのですね」
observe = 目撃。
"That's correct. I'd say it was less than five minutes later that we went into the woods. We left the main trail up the hill and went along a trampled-down path that went up the slopwnof the woods. It was pretty steep. After we'd been going for about ten minutes we came to a clearing, a broad area as flat as a table top. Once we'd entered the woods it was completely still, and with the sun blocked out it was chilly, but when we stepped into that clearing it was as if we were in a miniture town square, with the sky bright above us. My class often stopped at this spot whenever we clibmed Owan Yama. The place had a calming effect, and somehow made us all feel nice and cozy.

33 そうです。森に入ったのは、飛行機を目撃してから５分も経過していなかったと思います。私たちは 途中で登山道を離れ、森の斜面をついた踏み分け道道に入りました。ここだけはかなり厳しい上りです。 １０分ほど登ったところで、森が開けた場所に出ます。けっこう広い部分が、まるでテーブルのようにきれいに 平になっています。いったん森の中に足を踏み入れますと、しんとして、太陽に光は遮られ、空気は冷ややかに なりますが、そこだけは頭上も明るくひらけて、小さい広場みたいになっていました。私たちは「お椀山」に 登ると、よくその場所を訪れました。そこにいるとなぜか穏やかで親密な気持ちになれたからです。
We took a break once we reached this "square," putting down our packs, and then the children went into the wood in groups of three or four in search for mashrooms. I insisted that they never lose sight of one another. Before they set out, I gather them altogether and made sure they understood this. We knew the place well, but it was a wood, after all, and if any of them got separated and lost we'd have a hard time finding them. Still, you have to remember these are small children, and once they start hunting mushrooms they tend to forget this rule. So I always made sure that as I looked for the mushrooms myself I kept an eye on them, and a running head count.

34 私たちは「広場」につくと一休みし、荷物を下ろし、それから3名から４名ずつのグループの分かれて キノコ探しにとりかかりました。お互いに姿が目に入らないところには行かないというのが私の決めたルール でした。私はみんなを集めてそのルールをあらためて徹底させました。よく知った場所とはいえ、森のなかですし、 いったん奥に迷い込んでしまうと面倒なことになります。しかし小さな子供たちです。キノコとりに夢中になりますと、 ついついそんなルールは忘れてしまいます。ですから私は自分でもキノコを探しながら、常に目で子供たちの 頭数を勘定していました。
It was about ten minutes or so after we began hunting mushrooms that children started collapse.
When I first spotted a group of three of them collapsed on the ground I was sure they'd eaten poisonous mushrooms. There are a lot of highly toxic mushrooms around here, even one can be fatal. The local kids know which ones not to pick, but a few varieties are hard to distinguish. That's why I always warned the children never to put any in their mouths until we got back to school and had an expert check them. But you can't always expect kids to listen, can you?
子どもたちが倒れ始めたのは、その「広場」を中心にキノコをとり始めてからおよそ10分くらいたってからです。
最初に地面に子供たちがかたまって倒れているのを目にしたとき、私はまず毒キノコを食べたのでは ないかと考えました。この土地には生死にかかわるような猛毒をもったキノコがたくさん生えています。 地元の子供たちは見分けることができますが、それでも中には紛らわしいものがあります。ですから 学校に持って帰って専門家に選別してもらうまでは、どんなものも決して口にしないように強く 言い聞かせてありますが、子供たちがもんな言うことを聞くとは限りません。
I ran over to the spot and lifted the children who'd fallen to the ground. Their bodies were limp, like rubber that's been left out in the sun. But they were breathing fine. Their pulses were normal, and none of them had a temparature. They look calm, not at all like they were in any pain. I ruled out thinng like bee stings or snake bites. The children were simply unconscious.

私はあわててそこに駆け寄り、地面に倒れている子どもたちを抱き起こしました。子供たちの 身体はまるで、太陽の熱で柔らかくなったゴムみたいにぐんにゃりとしていました。なんだか抜け殻 みたいでした このあたりの一部に英訳はないなあ！。でも呼吸はして いました。手首に指をあててみますと、脈拍もだいたい正常のようでした。熱もありません。表情も 穏やかで、苦しんでいる様子も見受けられません。蜂にさされたとか、蛇に噛まれたとか、そういうのではなさそうです。 ただ意識がないのです。 「ただ」と「意識」の間に読点「、」がないないなあ。 「ただ、意識がない」ではなく「ただ意識がない」。
19 The strangest thing was their eyes. Their bodies were so limp it was as if they were in a coma, yet their eyes were open, seeming to be looking at something. They'd blink every once in a while, so it wasn't as though they were asleep. And their eyes moved very slowly from side to side, as if they were scanning a distant horizon. Their eyes at least were conscious, But they weren't actually looking at anything, or at least nothing I could see. I waved my hand a few times in front of their faces, but got no reaction.
I picked up each of the three children in turn, and they were all exactly the same all. All of them were unconscious, theie eyes slowly moving from side to side. It was the weirdist thing I'd ever seen.
35 いちばん奇妙なのは目でした。そのぐったりした状態は、昏睡している人の状態に近いのですが、でも 目は閉じられていません。目はごくふつうに開かれて、何かを眺めているみたいに見えまし た。ときどきまばたきもします。ですから、眠っていたというわけではないのです。そして瞳は ゆっくりと動いていました。まるでどこか遠くにある景色を端から端まで見渡しているみたいに、 静かに左右に動いていました。その瞳には意識がありました。でも実際にはその目は何も見て いません。少なくとも目のまえにあるものを見ているのではありません。私が目の前に手をかざして 動かしても、瞳は反応らしきものを見せませんでした。
私は三人の子供たちを順番に抱き上げていったのですが、三人が三人ともまったく同じ状態を しめしていました。意識はなくみんなが同じように目を開いて、左右にゆっくりと瞳を動かしています。 それは尋常ではない光景でした。
