04 Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing direction. You change direction, but the sandstorm changes you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside you. So all you can do is to give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step. There's no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverised bones. That's the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine.

10 ある場合には運命っていうのは、絶え間なく進行方向を変える局地的な砂嵐に似ている。 君はそれをさけようと足取りを変える。 そうすると、嵐も君にあわせてるように足どりを 変える。何度でも何度でも、まるで夜明け前に死神と踊る不吉なダンスみたいに、 それが繰りかえされる。なぜかといえば、その嵐はどこか遠くからやってきた無関係な なにかじゃないからだ。そいつはつまり、 君自身のことなんだ。君の中にあるなにかなんだ。 だから君にできることといえば、あきらめてその嵐の中にまっすぐ足を踏みいれ、 砂が 入らないように目と耳をしっかりふさぎ、一歩一歩とおり抜けていくことだけだ。 そこにはおそらく太陽もなく、月もなく、方向もなく、 あるばあいにはまっとうな時間さえ ない。そこには骨をくだいたような白い細かな砂が空高く舞っているだけだ。そういう 砂嵐を想像するんだ。
04 And there's exactly what I do. I imagine a white funnel stretching vertically up like a thick rope. My eyes are closed right, hands cupped over my ears, so those fine grains of sand can't blow inside me. The sand storm draws steadily closer. I can feel the air pressing on my skin. It really is going to swallow me up.
The boy called Crow rests a hand softly on my shoulder and with that the storm vanishes.
"From now on--no matter what--you've got to be the world's strongest 15-year-old. That's the only way you're going to survive. And in order to do that, you've got to figure what it means to be tough. You following me?
I keep my eyes closed and don't reply. I just want to sink off into sleep like this, his hand on my shoulder. I hear the faint flutter of wings.
"You're going to be the world's toughest 115-year-old," Crow wispers as I try to fall asleep. As if he were carving the words in a deep blue tatoo on my heart.

10 僕はそんな砂嵐を想像する。白いたつまきが空に向かって、まるで太いロープのようにまっすぐに 立ちのぼっている。僕は両手で目と耳をしっかりとふさいでいる。身体の中にその細かい砂が入ってしまわないように。 その砂嵐はこちらをめがけてどんどん近づいてくる。僕はその風圧を遠くから肌に感じることができる。それは 今まさに僕を呑み込もうとしている。
やがてカラスと呼ばれる少年はぼくの方にそっと手を置く。すると砂あらしは消える。でも僕はまだ目を 閉じたままでいる。
「君はこれから世界で一番タフな15歳の少年にならなくちゃいけないんだ。なにがあろうとさ。そうする 以外に君がこの世界を生きのびていく道はないんだがらね。そしてそのためには、本当にタフであることが どういうことなのか、君は自分で理解しなくちゃならない。わかったか」
僕はただ黙っている。少年の手を肩に判じながら、このままゆっくりと眠いに入ってしまいたいと 思う。かすかな羽ばたきが耳に届く。
「君はこれから世界で一番タフな１５歳の少年になる」とカラスと呼ばれる少年は、眠ろうとする僕の 耳もとで静かに繰り返す。僕の心に濃いブルーの字で、入れ墨を書き込むみたいに。
