He had worked with a Polish inventor on an unsinkable ship. He was a technical consultant in the field of television. In the life of a man of genius, all of those things might happen. But had they happened to Tamkin? Was he a genius? He often said that he had attended some of the Egyptian royal family as a psychiatrist. ウィルヘルムはそれらの新説をきいて、確かめようとした。夜が来ると狼のように窓から吠えるのは 本物らしい。それは実際に考えてみる値打ちがある。しかしギリシャ語とは！ 自分が話をどう受け止めたかを 見極めようと、タムキンがじっと見つめているのがわかった。新しい要素が常に付け加えられていた。 つい数日前、タムキンは暗黒街にいたことがあり、デトロイトの紫団の一員だったとほのめかしていた。 以前は、オハイオ州トレドの精神病院所の所長だった。浮沈戦艦の仕事をポーランドの発明家と共同で やったことがあった。テレビの分野で技術顧問だったことがある。一人の天才の生涯にわたり、こういうことが すべておこりえるのだろうか？ だが、それらは実際にタムキンにあったことだろう？ 天才なのか？ 精神医としてエジプトの王族を診察したことがあるとよく言った。「しかし、平民だろうが貴族だろうが みんな似たようなものさ」とウィルヘルムにいった。「貴族のほうが人生を知らないね」
