66 "Oh, you think I'm trying to amuse you," said Tamkin. "That's because you aren't familiar wth my outlook. I deal in facts. Facts always are sensational. I'll say that a second time. Facts always! are sensational."
Whilhelm was reluctant to part with his good mood. The doctor had little sense of humor. He was looking at him earnestly.
"I'd bet any amout of money," said Tamkin, "that the facts about you are sensational."
"Oh--ha, ha! You want them? You can sell them to a true-confession magagine."
outlook = 見解。視野。ものの考え。 you aren't familiar with my outlook.
a cheerful outllk on life = 楽天的な人生観。
sensational = very good. 素晴らし。 Facts are always sensational.
■ I'd bet any amount of money. = 絶対にまちがいない。
bet momey = 請け合う。確かだと当てにする。
a true-confession magagine = 実話雑誌。
64 「ああ、わたしがきみを可笑しがらせてようとしていると思っているわけだね。それは きみがわたしのものの考え方を知らないからさ。わたしは事実を手がけている。事実ってのは いつも素晴らしい。もう一度言っておこう。事実はいつも素晴らしいんだ」
ウィルヘルムは、今のいい気分と別れたくなかった。博士はユーモアの感覚をあまり もっていない。熱心にウィルヘルムを見つめた。
「こりゃ、絶対にまちがいない。きみについての事実だって素晴らしいよ」
「ああーはっ、はっ！ 事実が欲しいんですか？ 実話雑誌に売り込むといいですよ」
66 "People forget how sensational the things are that they do. They don't see it on themselves. It blends into the background of their daily life."
Whilhelm smiled. "Are you sure this boy tells you the truth?"
"Yes, because I've known the whole family for years."
"And you do psychological work with your own friends? I didn't know that was allowed."
"Well, I'm a radical in the profession. I have to do good whereever I can."
65 「世間のひとたちは、自分たちがしている事実がどんなに素晴らしいかを忘れている。 自分じゃそれを見ていない。日常生活という背景に溶け込んでいる」」
ウィルヘルムは微笑した。「その青年が真実を語っているのは確かですけね？」
「そうさ、もう何年も家族ぐるみで知っているからね」
「すると、あなたは自分のお友達を心理分析の仕事に使っているわけですね。そんな ことが許されるなんて知りませんでした」
「そうだな。仕事についちゃ革新波でね。いい仕事のためには手段を択ばないんだ」
Whiliam's face became ponderous again and pale. His whitened gold hair lay heavy on his head, and he clasped uneasy fingers on the table. Sensational, but oddly enough, dull, too. Now how do you figure that out? It blends with the background. Funny but unfunny. True but false. Casual but laborious, Tamukin was. Whilhelm was most suspicious of him when he took his driest tone.
face = 表情。顔つき。
his face was ponderous = heavy = 彼の表情は、重々しい。のっそりした。重くて取り扱いにくい。
take his driest tone = なにげない調子で話す。 dry = 飾り気のない。無味乾燥な。退屈な。
65 ウィルヘルムの表情はまた重々しくなり青ざめた。白っぽい金髪が頭に重くのしかかり、 テーブルの上で不安そうに指を組んだ。素晴らしくはあるが、奇妙なことに退屈でもある。こうなると、 判断がつかなくなってしまう。背景に溶け込んでいる。面白いがしかし、つまらない。真実であるが 虚偽。偶然であるが作為的。タムキンにはそういうところがある。一番何気ない調子で話すときが、 いちばんくさい。
66 "With me," said Dr. Tamkin, "I am at my most efficient when I don't need the fee. When I onI only love. Without a financially money. The spiritual compemsation is what I look for. Bringing people into the here-and-now. The real universe. That's the present moment. The past is not good to us. The future is full of anxiery. Only the present is real--the here-and-now. Seize the day.
65 「私についていえば」とタムキン博士は言った。「わたしは手数料を取らないとき、一番腕が 発揮できる。ただ愛情で仕事をするとき。経済的報酬がないとき。わたしは社会的影響力がないとき。わたしは 社会的影響から自分を切り離す。とくに金からね。精神的な報酬がわたしの求めるものだから。人々を 【ここで、いま】という状況に道びく。真実の宇宙にね。つまり現在の瞬間、過去は我々にとって役にたたない。 未来は不安に満ちている。ただ、現代だけは真実だよ― 【ここで、いま】。その日をつかめさ」

独白： ああ、この本のタイトル「時をつかめ」は、あろうことがタムキンの言葉だった。
ところで、原始仏教の瞑想（ヴィパサーナ瞑想）の中で、今に集中しなさい。過ぎ去った過去を思っても、過去は変えられない。「後悔」 ばかりだ。未来は不確実だ、「不安」を引き起こす。現在の自分に集中しなさい、と説く。
たぶん、著者のソール・ベローはそのことを知っている。
知っていて、タムキンに言わせる。金は要らない。精神的報酬だけを求める、という。
といいつつ。ウィルヘルムを騙し、ラードの先物にさそう、金を巻き上げ、相場が破産するとホテル から消える。
ウィルヘルムは、父親アドラー博士の忠告を聞き流し、無知による報酬を払わされる。
