64 "Don't you realize," Dr. Tamkin told him, "you can't march in a straight line to the victory? You fluctuate toward it. From Euclid to Newton there was straight lines. The modern age analyzes the wavers. On my own accounts, I took a licking in hides and coffee. But I have confidence. I'm sure I'll outguess them." He gave Wilhelm a narrow smile, friendly, calming, shrewd, and wizardlike, patronizing, secret, potent. He saw his fears and smiked at them. "It's something," he remarked, "to see how the competition-factor will manifest itself in different individuals."

64 「勝利に向かって直進するなんてありえないってことがわからないのかね？ 勝利は波動を 描いて進むのさ。ユークリッドからニュートンまでは直線だった。現代は波動を分析する。自分の懐でやってみて、 皮革とコーヒーでやられたことがある。しかし、私は自信を持っているよ。絶対におれのヨミ通りさ」 ウィルヘルムみ向かってかすかな笑顔を見せた。親し気で、なだめるような、抜け目のない、また、 魔法使いのような、保護者のような、秘密の、強力な笑顔だった。ウィルヘルムの恐怖をみてとると、 その恐怖にほほえみかけた。「競争の遺伝子がさまざまな個人にどう現れるかをみるのは、なかなか おのしろいもんでね」と言った。
64 "So?" Let's go over."
"But I haven't had my breakfast yet."
"I've had mine."
"Come, have a cut of coffee."
"I wouldn't want to meet my dad." Looking through the glass doors, Wilhelm saw that his father had left by the other exit. Whilhelm thought, he didn't want to run into me, either. He said to Dr. Tamkin, "Okay, I'll sit with you, but let's hurry it up becaise I'd like to get to the market while there's still a place to sit. Everybody and his uncle gets in ahead of you."
Looking through the glass doors = ガラスのドア越しにのぞみこむ
he didn't want to run into me = おやじのほうだって出くわすのはごめんだるう。
さいしょ、he はウィルヘルムだと思ったが、文脈的におかしいのでおやじなんだ。
while there's still a place to sit = 席がなくならないうちに出かけたい。
Everybody and his uncle gets in ahead of you. = まだみんなが押し寄せないうちに。

「しかし、まだ朝食をすませていないものでね」
「ぼくはすませました」
「まあ、コーヒーを一杯」
「おやじには会いたくないんです」ウィルヘルムはガラスのドア越しにのぞみこみながら、 父親が反対側のドアから出ていくのを見た。おやじのほうだって出くわすのはごめんだるうなと、 ウィルヘルムは思った。「ええ、ごいっしょしましょう。しかし、席がなくならないうちに出かけたい んで、急ぎましょう。まだみんなが押し寄せないうちに。
65 "I want to tell you about this boy and his dad. It's highly absorbing. The father was a nudist. Everybody went naked in the house. Maybe the woman found men with clothes, attractive. Her husband didn't believe in cutting his hair, either. He practiced dentistry. In his office he wore riding pants and a pair of boots, and he wore a green eyeshade."
"Oh, come off it," said Whilhelm.
"This is a true case history."
it's highly absorbing = とっても面白いんだ。
absorbing = 人を夢中にさせる。興味のつきない。
riding pants =
come off it = 辞めてください。
case history = 病歴。
64 「青年とその父親の話をわたしはしたいのさ。とっても面白いんだ。父親はヌーディスト でね。家の中じゃみんな裸なんだ。たぶん、奥さんはぶ区を着た男性が魅力的に見えたんだろうな。 歯科医を開業していた。診察室では、乗馬ズボンにブーツをはいて、緑の光線除けをかぶっていた」」
「もうやめてくださいよ」とウィルヘルムは言った。
「これは本当にあった病歴なんだがなあ」
65 Without warning, Whilhelm began to laugh. He himself had had no premonition of his change of humor. His face became warm and pleasant, and his forgot his father, his anxieties; he panted bearlike, happily, through his teeth. "This sounds like a horse-dentist. He wouldn't have to put on pants to treat a horse. Now what else are you going to tell me? Did the wife play the mandolin? Does the boy join the calavalry? Oh, Tamkin, you really are a killer-diller."
have no premonition of his change of his humor = 気分がこんなふうに変わるとは予想もしなかった。
humor = 気分。機嫌。気まぐれ。
calavalry = 騎兵隊。
killer-diller = ぞくぞくさせる素敵な人。パンチのきいた人。
64 だしぬけにウィルヘルムは笑い出した。気分がこんなふうに変わるとは予想もしなかった。 顔はあたたまり朗らかになって、父のことも、不安も忘れてしまった。楽しそうに、歯の間をとおして 熊のように喘（あえい）いだ。「そりゃ、馬の歯医者みたいなはなしですね。馬の治療をやるんなら ズボンなんかはかなくてもいいですね。ところで、ほかにどんな話があります？ 奥さんがマンドリン を引いたんですか？ 息子が 騎兵隊に入隊したんですか？ タムキンさん、あなたって人は、相手が参るくらい魅力が ありますよ」
◇◇◇ 独白
全体と物語にとってこのタムキンの話は、どんな意味があるのだろう？
そして、それに関心するウィルヘルムは？ マインドコントロールされているのだろうか。
ここ数回が、この物語の山のような予感がする。
