独白：きみは誰のために、なんのためにここにアップしているかね。今のきみの人生の優先順位はなんだ？
誰のためにアップしているかだって？ もちろん自分のためだ。
なんのためにアップしているかだって？ 語学力維持、継続、世界の名作を楽しむためだ。それに加齢と記憶力の実験。
① 語学力の維持、英語と日本語。
② このシリーズ「原書で読む世界の名作」は 250回を超えた。一年は50 週、二週に一回 upすると 10年になる（継続）。
③ 「赤毛のアン」L・M・モンゴメリ、「グレート・ギャツビー」F・S・フィッツジェラルド、「賢者の贈り物」「最後の一葉」O・ヘンリ、「一九八四」J.オーウェル、「クリスマス・キャロル」チャールス・ディケンズ、「その時をつかめ」ソール・ベロー... 世界の名作を楽しむ。
④ わたしは８２歳。さいきん辞書を引く回数が多くなる。加齢と記憶力の実験でもある。
⑤ 現在のわたしの人生の優先順位。英文と日本を読む視力、体力の維持。徒歩 10 分の「精文館書店」まで歩けること。
59 "Yes, sir, I know," the manager had said. He was a cold, mind, lean German who dressed correctly and around his neck wore a pair of opera glasses with which he read the board. He was an extremely correct person except that he never shaved in the morning, not caring, probably, how he looked to the fumblers and the old people and operators and the gamblers and idlers of Broadway uptown. The maeket closed at three. mybe, Wilhelm guessed, he had a thick beard and took a lady out to dinner later and wanted to look fresh-shaven.

60 「はい、存じあげております」と支店長は言った。それは冷静で、穏やかで、 やせたドイツ人で、きちんと身なりをととのえ、表示板を読むために使うオペラ・グラス を首にかけていた。恐ろしく几帳面な人物だったが、ただ午前中に髭を剃ることはなかった。 ブロードウェイの住宅街をうろつく連中や、老人や、相場師や賭博師や、怠け者たちに 自分がどう見えているかを気にしている様子はなかった。市場は三時でひけた。 たぶんこの男は髭が濃くて、あとで女性を夕食に連れ出すときに、剃ったはかりの ところを見せたいのだろう。
59 "Just a question," said Whilhelm. "A few minute ago I signed a power of attorney so Doctor Tan\mkin could invenst for me. You gave me a blanks,"
"Yes, sri, I remember."
"Now this is what I want to know," WHilhelm had said. "I'm no lawyer and I only gave ne the power a glance. Does this give Doctor Taml\kin poewr of attorney over any other assets of mine--moneu, or property?"
The rain had dribbled from Whilhelm's deformed, transparent raincoat; the buttons of his shirt, which always seemed tiny, were partly broken, in pearly quarters of the moon, and some of the dark, thick golden hairs that grew on his beelly sttod out.
60 「質問が一つだけあります」とウィルヘルムは言った。ついさっき、タムキン先生が ぼくの代理人として投資できるよう委任状に署名しました。あなたは用紙をくださいましたね」
「はい、覚えておりますとも」
「ところで、伺いたいのはそこなんです」とウィルヘルムは言った。「わたしは 法律がわからなくて、ただ書面をちらりと見ただけです。あれは、わたしの他の資産、 つまり金銭や所有物とかについての委任を与えたことになるのでしょうか？」
雨がウィルヘルムの型の崩れた透明のレインコートから滴り落ちていた。いつもは とても小さく見えるワイシャツのボタンは、真珠色に見える月の四分の一のあたる部分がかけて いて、腹に生えている黒っぽい、濃い金色の毛がはみ出していた。
60 It was the manager's business to conceal his oppinion of him; he was shrewed, gray, correct (although unshaven) and had little to say except on matters that came to his desuk. He must have recognized in Whilhelm a man who reflected long and then made the decision he had rejected twenty separate times. Silvery, cool, level, long-profiled, experienced, indifferent, observant, with unshaven refinement, he scarecely looked at Whilhelm, who trembled with fearful awkwardness. The manager's face, low-colored, long-nostriled, acted as a unit of perception; his eyes merely did their reduced share. Here was a man, like Rubin, who knew and knew. He, a foreigner, knew; Whilhelm, in the city of his birth, was ignorant.

60 客について意見を表に出さないのは支店長のやり方だった。抜け目のない、白髪交じり の、きちんとした（髭は剃っていなかったが）人物で、自分のデスク回わってきた仕事のほかは ほとんど口を出さなかった。長いこと思いめぐらし、二十回もあれこれ拒否したあとで やって決心をつけた男の姿をウィルヘルムの中に認めた。銀髪、冷静、沈着、細長い プロフィル、豊富な経験、無関心、慎重、そして髭を剃っていない洗練を身につけて いる支店長は、すっかりばつの悪そうな顔をして震えているウィルヘルムには目もくれなかった。 冴えない色、細長い鼻孔を持つ支店長の顔は、それ自体が一つの感覚器官として動いていた。 目は顔の一部としえ退化した機能を果たしているに過ぎない。これはルービンのような 男でなにから何まで心得ている。外国人であるその男が知っていて、この町にうまれたおれが 無知だとは！
