58 Five days ago Tamkin had said, "Meet me tommorow, and we'll go to the market." Whilhelm, therefore, had had to go. At eleven o'clock they had walked to the brokerage office. On the way, Tamkin broke the news to Whilhelm that though this was an equal partnership he couldn't put up this half of the money just yet; it was tied up for a week or so in one of his patents. Today he would be two hundred dollars short; next he'll make it up. But neither of them needed an income from the market, of course. This was only a sporting proposition anyhow, Tamkin said. Whilhelm had to answer, "Of course." It was too late to withdraw. Whatelse could he do? Then came the formal part of the transaction, and it was frightening. The very shade of green of Tanmkin's check looked wrong; it was a false, disheartening color. His handwriting was peculiar, even monstrous; the e's were like it's, the t's and l's the same, and he's like wasps' bellies. He wrote like forurth-grader, Scientists, however, dealt mostly in symbols; they printed, This was Whilhelm's exlanation.

59 五日前にタムキン博士は言った。「明日、来たまえ、そうしたらいっしょに取引所に出かけよう」 そんなわけで、ウィルヘルムは行かなければならなかった。十一時に、二人は仲買人の店まで歩いて いった。その途中、これは折半の共同出資になるわけだけれど、さしあたっては、半額を出すわけには いかないという話を打ち明けた。自分が持っている特許のせいで一週間かそこら金が動かせない。今日は ２００ドル不足で、来週、不足分を持ってくるということだった。しかし、お互いに市場で稼ぐ必要は ない。いずれにしろ、面白半分にやっていることなのだから、とタムキンは言った。ウィルヘルムは 「もちろんですとも」と言わなければならなかった。手を引くには遅すぎた。ほかにどうすることが 出来よう。つぎに型通りの手続きが取られたが、それは恐ろしいものだった。タムキンの小切手の緑の ぼかしがすでにおかしかった。偽物くさく、がっかりするような色彩だった。その筆跡は風変わりで、 奇怪でさえあった。e はi見たいで、 tと lはおなじで、 hはスズメ蜂の腹みたいだった。小学校 四年生程度の字だ。しかしながら、科学者というものはたいてい記号を使うのであって、文字は 活字体になるものだ。ウィルヘルムはそう自分勝手な説明をつけた。
58 Dr. Tamkin had given him his check for three hundred dollars. 59 タムキン博士は前に三百ドルの小切手をウィルヘルムに渡していた。ウィルヘルムは目がくらみ 体ががくがくして正常さを失い、千ドルの小切手を書くときには手の震えをおさえようとそ苦心惨憺した ものだ。唇と固くむすび、テーブルに大きな背をかがめ、崩れそうなおびえた指で書いた。もし、 タムキンの小切手が不渡りになったら、自分の預金まで支払ねばならないのはわかっていた。 ウィルヘルムはが見せた唯一の賢明さは、緑色の小切手を清算する時間的余裕を与えるために日付を 一日先延ばししておいたことだ。
59 Next he had signed a power of attorney, allowing Tamkin to speculate his money, and this was an even more frightening document. Tamkin had never said a word about it, but here they were and it had to be done.
After delivering his signatures, the only precaution Whohelm took was to come back to the manegers of the brokerage office and asked him privately, "Uh, about Doctor Tamkin. We were in here a few minutes ago, remember?"
That day had been weeping, smoky one and Whilhelm had gotten away from Tamkin on the pretext of having tu run to the post office. Tamkin had gone to lunch alone, and here was Whilhelm, back again, breathless, his hat dripping, needlessly asking the manager if he had remembered.

59 つぎに、タムキンに自分の金を投資する権限を認める委任状に署名したが、これは前にもまして 恐るべき書類であった。タムキンはこの件についてあらかじめ何も言わなかったが、ここまできた以上は するより仕方なかった。
署名をしたあと、ウィルヘルムが払った唯一の注意といえば、仲買人の支店長のところにいき、 こっそりとたずねてみることだった。「えーと、タムキン博士のことですけど、ついさっき、私どもは ここに来たんですよ。覚えていますかね？」
その日はしとしとと雨に降る煙った日で、ウィルヘルムは郵便局までひとっ走り行ってくると口実を 作ってタムキンから逃げ出した。タムキンは独りで昼食にでかけ、ウィルヘルムの方はまた店に戻って、 息を弾ませ、帽子から水滴をしたたらせ、覚えているかねと必要のないことをたずねていた。

60 「はい、ぞんじあげております」と支店長は言った。それは冷静で、穏やかで、やせたドイツ人で、きちんとした 身なりを整え、表示板を読むのに使うオペラ・グラスを首にかけていた。恐ろしく几帳面な人物だったが、ただ午前中 に髭を剃ったことはなかった。ブロードウェイの住宅街をうろついている連中や、老人や、相場師や賭博師や、怠け者 たちに自分がどう見えようとも期にはしていない様子だった。市場は三時にひけた。たぶんこの男は髭が濃くて、あとで 女性を夕食に連れ出すときに、剃ったばかりのところをみせたいのだろう。
