Leading Chinese dissident Fang Lizhi has died in exile in the United States. He was 76.
His friend and fellow US-based dissident Wang Dan wrote on the Internet that Fang died in Arizona on Friday.
Fang was an astrophysicist who inspired China's pro-democracy student protests in the 1980s. He was compared with the Soviet-era physicist and leading dissident Andrei Sakharov.
Fang was the vice president of the University of Science and Technology when Chinese authorities alleged his speeches to students incited unrest and fired him in 1987. He was then expelled from the Communist Party.
But he remained active in seeking the release of political prisoners.
Fang became an ideological leader of student pro-democracy protests, which led to the Tiananmen Square incident in Beijing in 1989.
Soon after the crackdown at Tiananmen Square, he fled to the US Embassy in Beijing and spent one year there before being allowed to leave the country.
In exile, he was a physics professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Fang kept active in the pro-democracy movement, expressing criticism of China's one-party rule through speeches and the Internet.

この単語だけで、“亡命者”という意味もあります。dissident 民主運動家
オリジナルの意味は、“反体制の”という意味がありますが、この場合はdemocratic leaderの話ですから、”民主運動家”とするのが良いでしょう。
alleged
根拠無しに物事を断言する、決定を下すさいに使う動詞です。オリジナルの意味は”断言する”ですが、そのまま「～断言した」とするとカッコ悪いので、この文の意味合いでは「～理由で～された」程度でよいのではないでしょうか。
incited 煽動する
”引用する”と間違えることが多いですが、誘発するとか、そういう意味ですね。triggerになるということです。
unrest 民主化運動
こちらも意訳になりますね。オリジナルは”不安”とか”暴力行為＝violence”という意味ですが、文の流れからして”民主化運動”が適切でしょう。英語は繰り返し同じ表現を使用するのを避ける傾向にありますから、このようにunrestやdissidentという単語を使って"democratic"とわざわざ言わないようにしているのだと思います。
