VI. The Witnesses to Sin
罪の証人たち
1. ①Pain demonstrates the body must be real.
②It is a loud, obscuring voice whose shrieks would silence what the Holy Spirit says, and keep His words from your awareness.

- obscure [əbskjúər] : 「分かりにくくする、見えなくする、覆い隠す」
- shriek [ʃríːk] : 「甲高い声、金切り声、悲鳴」
- silence [sáiləns] : 「静める、黙らせる、沈黙させる」
- awareness [əwέərnis] : 「認識、自覚、気付いていること、意識性」
③Pain compels attention, drawing it away from Him and focusing upon itself.
- compel [kəmpél] : 「〜に強制的に〜させる、強要する、強いる」
- attention [əténʃən] : 「注意、留意、注目」
- draw [drɔ́ː] : 「 〜を引く、引き込む」
- away from : 「〜から離れて」
- focus [fóukəs] upon : 「〜に焦点を合わせる、〜に集中する」
④Its purpose is the same as pleasure, for they both are means to make the body real.

- same [séim] : 「同じ、同一の、変わらない」
- pleasure [pléʒər] : 「喜び、楽しみ、快楽、楽しいこと、好み」

- means [míːnz] : 「手段、方法、資力」
- make [SVOC] : 「〜の状態を作り出す、〜にする」
⑤What shares a common purpose is the same.
⑥This is the law of purpose, which unites all those who share in it within itself.
- share [ʃέər] : 「〜を分ける、分かち合う、共有する、共用する」
- common [kάmən] : 「共通の、共有の、公共の、公衆の、公の」
- law [lɔ́ː] : 「法、法律、法規、法令」
- unite [junáit] : 「〜を結合させる、一つにする、結び付ける」
⑦Pleasure and pain are equally unreal, because their purpose cannot be achieved.
- equally [íːkwəli] : 「等しく、同様に、一様に、均一に」
- unreal [ʌnríəl] : 「実在しない、非現実的な、実存しない、虚偽の」
- achieve [ətʃíːv] : 「成し遂げる、達成する、成就する」
⑧Thus are they means for nothing, for they have a goal without a meaning.

⑨And they share the lack of meaning which their purpose has.

2. ①Sin shifts from pain to pleasure, and again to pain.
② For either witness is the same, and carries but one message: "You are here, within this body, and you can be hurt.

- within [wiðín] : 「〜の中に、〜の内側に」
- hurt [hə́ːrt] : 「痛む、苦しい、傷つく」
③You can have pleasure, too, but only at the cost of pain. "
- at the cost [kɔ́st] of : 「〜を費やして、〜を犠牲にして」
④These witnesses are joined by many more.
⑤Each one seems different because it has a different name, and so it seems to answer to a different sound.
- witness [wítnəs] : 「目撃者、証人、参考人、証拠、証言」

- many more : 「さらに多くの」
- seem [síːm] : 「〜のように見える、〜するように思われる」

- sound [sáund] : 「音、音声」
⑥Except for this, the witnesses of sin are all alike.
⑦Call pleasure pain, and it will hurt.
- except [iksépt] for : 「〜を除けば、〜を別にすれば」
- alike [əláik] : 「似ている、そっくりで」
⑧Call pain a pleasure, and the pain behind the pleasure will be felt no more.
- behind [biháind] : 「〜の後ろに、後方に、〜の裏側に、〜の陰」

- feel [fíːl] : 「〜を感じる、感知する」
- no more : 「もはや〜しない」
⑨Sin's witnesses but shift from name to name, as one steps forward and another back.
- step [stép] : 「進める、歩く」
- forward [fɔ́ːrwərd] : 「前方へ」
- step forward : 「前に進む、前に出る」
- another [ənʌ́ðər] : 「もう一つ、もう一人」
- back [bǽk] : 「後方へ、後ろに、元の位置へ、戻って」
⑩Yet which is foremost makes no difference.
⑪ Sin's witnesses hear but the call of death.
- foremost [fɔ́ːrmòust] : 「第一の、一番の、真っ先」
- make no difference [dífərəns] : 「違いがない」
- hear [híər] : 「〜を聞く、聴く、〜が聞こえる、耳にする」
- call [kɔ́ːl] : 「呼びかけ、叫び、要求、需要」
- death [déθ] : 「死、消滅、死亡、破滅、終わり、終焉」
3. ①This body, purposeless within itself, holds all your memories and all your hopes.

- memory [méməri] : 「思い出、出来事、記憶、記憶力」
- hope [hóup] : 「希望、望み、願い」
②You use its eyes to see, its ears to hear, and let it tell you what it is it feels.
③It does not know.

④It tells you but the names you gave to it to use, when you call forth the witnesses to its reality.

- witness [wítnəs] : 「目撃者、証人、証拠、証言」
- reality [riǽləti] : 「現実、真実、事実、実態、実相」
⑤You cannot choose among them which are real, for any one you choose is like the rest.
- choose [tʃúːz] : 「〜を選ぶ、〜を選択する」
- among [əmʌ́ŋ] : 「〜の間に、〜のうちで」
- real [ríəl] : 「実在する、現実の、実際の、本物」

⑥This name or that, but nothing more, you choose.
⑦You do not make a witness true because you called him by truth's name.
- make [SVOC] : 「〜の状態を作り出す、〜にする」
- true [trúː] : 「真の、真実の、本当の、本物の」
⑧The truth is found in him if it is truth he represents.
⑨And otherwise he lies, if you should call him by the holy Name of God Himself.

4. ①God's Witness sees no witnesses against the body.
②Neither does He harken to the witnesses by other names that speak in other ways for its reality.
- witness against : 「〜に不利な証言」
- neither [níːðər] : 「〜もまた…ない」
- harken [hɑ́ːrkn] = hearken [hɑ́ːrkn] : 「耳を傾ける、よく聞く、傾聴する」
- other [ʌ́ðər] : 「ほかの、そのほかの、残りの、もう一方の」
- speak [spíːk] : 「話す、口を開く」
- way [wéi] : 「方法、やり方、手段、方途、様式」
- reality [riǽləti] : 「現実、真実、事実、実態、実相」
③He knows it is not real.
④For nothing could contain what you believe it holds within.
- contain [kəntéin] : 「〜を含む、包含する、収容できる」
- believe [bilíːv] : 「信じる、真に受ける、確信する、信頼する」
- hold [hóuld] : 「維持する、保持する、持続する」
- within [wiðín] : 「〜の中に、〜の内側に」
⑤Nor could it tell a part of God Himself what it should feel and what its function is.

- feel [fíːl] : 「〜を感じる、感知する」
- function [fʌ́ŋkʃən] : 「職務、役割、機能、作用、働き」
⑥Yet must He love whatever you hold dear.
⑦ And for each witness to the body's death He sends a witness to your life in Him Who knows no death.

⑧Each miracle He brings is witness that the body is not real.
⑨ Its pains and pleasures does He heal alike, for all sin's witnesses do His replace.

5. ①The miracle makes no distinctions in the names by which sin's witnesses are called.
- distinction [distíŋkʃən] : 「区別、識別、差別、差異、違い」
- sin [sín] : 「罪、罪悪、ばかげたこと、過失、罪業」
- witness [wítnəs] : 「目撃者、証人、証拠、証言」
- call [kɔ́ːl] : 「〜を叫ぶ、〜を…と名付ける」
②It merely proves that what they represent has no effects.
③And this it proves because its own effects have come to take their place.

- effect [ifékt] : 「結果、影響、作用、効果、効力」

④It matters not the name by which you called your suffering.
⑤It is no longer there.
- matter [mǽtər] : 「重要である、問題である」
- suffering [sʌ́fəriŋ] : 「苦しむこと、苦しみ、苦痛、苦難、苦悩」
- no longer : 「もはや〜でない」
⑥The One Who brings the miracle perceives them all as one, and called by name of fear.
- bring [bríŋ] : 「〜を持って来る、〜をもたらす」
- perceive [pərsíːv] : 「知覚する、〜に気付く、〜を見抜く」
- fear [fíər] : 「恐れ、恐怖」
⑦As fear is witness unto death, so is the miracle the witness unto life.
- death [déθ] : 「死、消滅、死亡、破滅、終わり、終焉」
- life [láif] : 「命、人命、生命、寿命」
⑧It is a witness no one can deny, for it is the effects of life it brings.

⑨The dying live, the dead arise, and pain has vanished.
⑩Yet a miracle speaks not but for itself, but what it represents.

6. ①Love, too, has symbols in a world of sin.
②The miracle forgives because it stands for what is past forgiveness and is true.

③How foolish and insane it is to think a miracle is bound by laws that it came solely to undo!

- insane [inséin] : 「正気でない、精神障害の、非常識な」
- bound [báund] : 「縛られた、束縛された」
- be bound by : 「〜に制約される、〜に縛られる」
- law [lɔ́ː] : 「法、法律、法規、法令」
- solely [sóulli] : 「もっぱら、ただ一人で、一人だけ、単に」
- undo [ʌndú] : 「〜を元に戻す、元どおりにする、取り消す」
④The laws of sin have different witnesses with different strengths.
⑤ And they attest to different sufferings.

- strength [stréŋkθ] : 「力、強さ、体力」
- attest [ətést] : 「証言する、証明する」
- attest to : 「証拠立てる、証言する、証明する、立証する」

⑥Yet to the One Who sends forth miracles to bless the world, a tiny stab of pain, a little worldly pleasure, and the throes of death itself are but a single sound; a call for healing, and a plaintive cry for help within a world of misery.

- call [kɔ́ːl] : 「叫び、叫び声」 healing [híːliŋ] : 「治療、回復、治癒、癒やし」
- plaintive [pléintiv] : 「悲しげな、物悲しい、哀調を帯びた」
- cry [krái] : 「叫び声、わめき声、泣き声」
- within [wiðín] : 「〜の中で、〜の内側に」
- misery [mízəri] : 「悲惨、不幸、苦痛、惨めさ」
⑦It is their sameness that the miracle attests.
⑧ It is their sameness that it proves.
- sameness [séimnis] : 「同一性、類似、酷似、単調」
- prove [prúːv] : 「証明する、〜となる」
⑨The laws that call them different are dissolved, and shown as powerless.

⑩The purpose of a miracle is to accomplish this.
⑪ And God Himself has guaranteed the strength of miracles for what they witness to.

7. ①Be you then witness to the miracle, and not the laws of sin.
②There is no need to suffer any more.

- sin [sín] : 「罪、罪悪、ばかげたこと、過失、罪業」
- need [níːd] : 「〜する必要がある、〜を必要とする」

- any more : 「これ以上、それ以上、もはや、今さら」
③But there is need that you be healed, because the suffering and sorrow of the world have made it deaf to its salvation and deliverance.

- suffering [sʌ́fəriŋ] : 「苦しむこと、苦しみ、苦痛、苦難、苦悩」
- sorrow [sɑ́rou] : 「悲しみ、悲哀、後悔」

- deaf [déf] : 「耳が聞こえない、聞こうとしない、聞く耳を持たない」
- salvation [sælvéiʃən] : 「救出、救済、救い、救世」
- deliverance [dilívərəns] : 「救出、解放」
8. ①The resurrection of the world awaits your healing and your happiness, that you may demonstrate the healing of the world.
- resurrection [rèzərékʃən] : 「き返り、よみがえり、蘇生、復活」
- await [əwéit] : 「〜を待つ、待ち受ける、待望する」
- happiness [hǽpinəs] : 「幸福、喜び、幸せ」

②The holy instant will replace all sin if you but carry its effects with you.
③And no one will elect to suffer more.

- carry [kǽri] : 「〜を伝える、〜を運ぶ、〜を持ち運ぶ」

- elect [ilékt] : 「選ぶ、選出する」
- elect to : 「〜することを選択する、〜することにする」
- suffer [sʌ́fər] : 「苦しむ、苦痛を感じる、不快な経験をする」
④What better function could you serve than this?
⑤Be healed that you may heal, and suffer not the laws of sin to be applied to you.

⑥And truth will be revealed to you who chose to let love's symbols take the place of sin.
