通詞という職業 龍馬伝より

NHK popular program on every Sunday night is Ryoma this year.

I found it very interesting that interpretation between foreigners and Japanese warriors .

As well known, all intellectual classs in Edo era, it was Dutch for the study target as a foreign language.

Around 1850~, foreign ships often appeard for menace and request for free trade, then they discovered Dutch didn't work, but English for communication,

Resolving this situation, an american interpreter spoke in Dutch to a Japnese interpreter, he then interpreted that from Dutch to Japanese language to his superior, Finally he translated Japanese to Dutch, then an american spoke in English by interpreting Dutch,!

How complexing!

In this case, it requires an american interpreter definetely understand Dutch.

What a tremendous efforts have to be done to reach a successful agreements......

I don't know this scene was already ON air or not.

I really praise their talents and resourcefulness.

Regarding this kind of ploblem, this reminds me of the epochmaking event on 1549 when F,Xavier embarked upon Kagoshima pre. with Anjiro.

Anjiro was well knowlegable about Christianity, he himself translated the basic dogma from Portugee to Japanese.

Then the superior did the preach in Japanese on the busy streets and made it.

I was always touched about this kind of efforts foreahead of us.
