Hello everyone,
I hope you're having a good week. I'm busy at the moment translating speeches for the PLS students' speech homework. I found out some unexpected things about some students and learnt some new Japanese words. One of my students wants to be a television comedian. I was surprised to read this because she is always very polite in class and a little quiet. I often ask her to speak up. Her mother used the phase "ねこをかぶる”. It's a Japanese idiom and translates directly as "put on a cat". It means to put on an innocent face and hiding your true personality which might be devious. I grew up with cats so I can understand this very well. Our cats would always be well behaved in front of visitors but in front of family would scratch and fight and demand food. Anyway, I'm glad she has this dream and I hope she speaks up more in class and shows some more of her personality.

翻訳作業をしていると、生徒の知らない一面を見れたり、知らない日本語を学ぶことがあります。私のある女の子の生徒さんは、コメディアンになりたいという作文です。
私はその作文を読んでびっくり
しました。なぜなら彼女はクラスでとっても礼儀正しく、静かだからです。私はいつも彼女に「もう少し大きな声で言って」と言ってるくらいです。
彼女のお母さんは「うちの子はねこをかぶってるんです
」と言っていました。
これは日本のイディオムで、英語に直訳すると「put on a cat」になります。
これはみなさんご存知のように「本当の顔をかくすこと」です。私は、小さい頃に猫をかっていて、この「猫をかぶる」の表現がよくわかります。私達が飼っていた猫は、お客さんの前だとすごく態度がよく、家族の前では、喧嘩をしたりエサをねだってきました
。
それはさておき、私の生徒がこのような夢を持っていることがわかって嬉しくなりました。もうちょっとクラスでの声を大きくして、本当の彼女を見せてほしいですね。
If you've read Alice in Wonderland you'll know the Cheshire cat with the very wide grin. So if you have a big smile you can say you are "smiling like a Cheshire cat". Also if you reveal a secret you can say you've "let the cat out of the bag". There are many English phrases and idioms about cats. I'll leave you with one last one. If somewhere is spacious or wide then there is "room to swing a cat". Please don't actually do this, though.

大きな笑顔をする人を「smiling like a Cheshire cat」（チェシャーキャットのような笑顔）と言います。秘密を明らかにするときには、「let the cat out of the bag」（バッグから猫をだす）と言います。
猫を使った沢山のイディオムが英語にも存在します。
あともう一つ紹介しますね。
広々とした場所のことを「room to swing a cat」（猫をぐるぐる回す部屋）といいます。ただこんなことはしないでくださいね。
