先日，英作文の問題を見ていました。その中に「アジア全体」という表現がありました。
この「アジア全体」は英語にするとどうなるでしょう。私は，"the whole Asia"かなと思ってしまったのですが，どうやらこれは×で，正しくは"the whole of Asia"となるようです。
ofがなければ間違いで，ofが入れば正しいというのはおもしろいですね。考えてみると，wholeの使い方はあまり考えたことがありませんでした。
①特定の名詞と使うwhole →the / 所有格など＋whole＋名詞：（名詞）全体
※この「名詞」は，可算名詞の単数形が原則
※複数名詞，固有名詞，不可算名詞は使わない
←あぁ，だから"the whole Asia"は×なのですね。
・ちなみに，allを使うと，"all the＋名詞"，"all 所有格＋名詞"の語順になる。
また，allの後ろは複数名詞や不可算名詞も使えるはず。
例えば，"all the advice"とは言えても，"the whole advice"は×。
②複数名詞（or単数名詞）と使うwhole →(a) whole＋名詞：丸々（名詞）
※この「名詞」は時間が多い。 ex) a whole day / two whole weeks
※この用法の場合，wholeに複数名詞が続くことがある。
←"whole books"なら，"a whole book（本丸々１冊）"が複数，という感じだそうだ。
③名詞扱いのwhole →the whole of＋名詞：（名詞）全体
※この「名詞」は可算名詞の単数形や不可算名詞，固有名詞など，とのこと。
特に「地域名」なら，このパターンを使う。
ex) the whole of Japan（≒all of Japan / all Japan）
なお，"the whole"を使うと，名詞を「全体で一体のもの」と捉えた印象で，"all (the)"を使うと，名詞を「部分の集合体」と捉えた印象になるとのこと。・・・，はい，まだピンときていません。何かいい用例があれば，追加していこうと思います。
