I want to talk about my childhood in San Francisco.
I was born at a Children's hospital near downtown San Francisco.
Fortunately, my father was able to work in one area so my family just moved a couple times within the city. We ended up moving into a normal house in the Sunset district when I was 3 years old.
I attended an elementary school, which was a 15-minute walk. There, I was able to meet so many friends, who I still keep in touch with today. San Francisco is a diverse city, there are Caucasians, Latinos, Blacks, Asians, and so many more from other countries. In the Sunset district, there are mostly Asians, mainly Chinese-Americans. Naturally, I was able to pick up some Chinese since many of my classmates spoke Chinese to each other. After school, I would play with my friends at a park next to my school. There, I usually played tag, basketball, football, and baseball. In Japan, many kids play soccer, baseball, or hide and seek at parks, it seems.
Some of the extracurricular activities I have done were baseball, swimming, soroban (yes there was a Japanese soroban class), violin, and Japanese school. The only one I enjoyed was baseball. My parents forced me to learn other things and I absolutely hated it. But in the end, I was glad was able to learn swimming, soroban, and Japanese because:
1. In San Francisco, we are required to take a swimming test to graduate high school. If you don't pass you cannot graduate.
2. I was able to get high scores in Mathematics courses.
3. If I didn't learn Japanese at a young age, I would not be living in Japan.
This is one of many memories I had growing up in America.
If you have any childhood memories you'd like to share, please come to Petit Planet and tell me about them!
