Mia St. Clair aims to follow her dreams. Rather than pursue the skating path paved by her older brothers who play hard core ice hockey, Mia strives to become an elegant figure skater. This progressive utopia, told as a first-person narrative, includes common conflicts, such as the financial strain her family experiences as they struggle to pay for her lessons. But Mia's real conflict is within herself. She has difficulty adapting to a new coach, learning how to compete as a solo figure skater, and ultimately pushing herself to improve and be the best figure skater possible. At times, the narrative feels a bit too mature. Mia makes decisions that are wise and well-disciplined beyond her ten years of age. Still, this can be overlooked as Mia's world provides a positive role model for growing girls. The text is a bit longer than most "American Girl" novels, and it includes a nonfiction section entitled "Real Girls, Real Letters" about girls competing in sports and developing their talents.
