Hello, my name is Daniel Okinaka.

I'm from Las Vegas in the United States. My mother is from Kanazawa and my father is Nissei from Hilo, Hawaii. I have also lived four years in Los Angeles, four years in San Francisco, and one year in Vancouver, Canada. I have lived a total of five years in Tokyo as well.

I came to Japan to learn more about Japanese culture and eventually I would like to do international business with Japan and the U.S. as well as other countries.

My hobbies include, traveling, watching movies, karaoke, and video games.
I hope we can become good friends and I will try my best to help you learn English. I think the key to learning English is not to be afraid to make mistakes and enjoy different cultures.

Biking starts my day and reading a good book in the bed ends it. I read approximately 3 books in a week. Moreover, I also spend my time by playing chess and shogi. This makes karaoke bars as one of my favorite places in Japan.

ンワイアットに入社。93年には同社代表取締役社長に就任。97年に独立しピープ
ルファクターコンサルティングを設立。
2000年から、慶應義塾大学大学院政策・メディア研究科教授も努め、現在は、慶
応義塾大学ＳＦＣ研究所上席所員を務める。著書多数。

In the News #50 - Slight Catch

On Mar. 6, the Daily Yomiuri ran the story “Slight catch to EU ban on dumping of dead fish”.

Writer Frank Pope reports on Britain’s decision the week before to support the European Union’s ban that prevents fishing boats from returning dead fish to the ocean. The main issue in this decision is that drag net fishing captures large numbers of different kinds of fish at one time, and the quotas may be exceeded for any given species of fish.

Therefore, the fishing boats are required by law to return the “over-quota” fish to the ocean. But, because the drag nets are so damaging to the fish, and to the sea bed, many of the fish are killed when caught in the net. According to the report, up to half of the fish caught are dead when pulled into the boat. Fishing companies protest the ban on dumping claiming that it will cost them lots of money to change their fishing practices.

The fish caught by a fisherman is called “the catch”. Often we use “caught” metaphorically in the sense of “catching a fish”.

Examples:
“Look at what I caught” (used when unexpectedly encountering a friend on the street).
“The ad for new shoes caught my eye.”
“I caught a cold last week.”

Another meaning to “catch” is “uneven mechanical movement cause by a bump or crack in the metal of the machine”. When we have a door that doesn’t swing closed properly, it may be due to a flaw in the door’s hinge. We can then say that a “catch in the hinge” is preventing the smooth movement of the door. Sometimes a “catch” is intentional, such as with the spring mechanism of a clock, where the part called “the catch” is used to control the speed of the clock. In both cases “a catch” prevents something from moving smoothly.

The idiom “a slight catch” is used to describe a small problem.

Examples include:
“There was a slight catch in our sales plan – we forgot to advertise the product in the magazines.”
“A slight catch in the bank robber’s getaway plan allowed the police to capture him.”
“The delay in getting the product to market was caused by a slight catch in the production phase.”

Combining “a slight catch” meaning “a small problem” with “a ban on a fishing catch” implies either that the size of the fishing catch is small, or that there is something that would prevent the fishing ban from going into effect. However, there is nothing in the article supporting these interpretations of the headline. “Slight catch to EU ban” actually doesn’t relate to the content of the article at all. Instead, the Daily Yomiuri editors simply chose to rewrite the headline for use in the newspaper especially for the wordplay. Unfortunately, this rewrite indicates that there’s something wrong with the wording or the implementation of the ban itself, which is not the case.

When you read the newspapers this week, look for other examples of “a slight catch”.
