英語でニュースを読もう～メキシコ湾原油流出事故

今年の4月22日、米ルイジアナ州沖の石油掘削施設で
大規模な爆発が発生し、
その事故が原因で始まった原油の流出。

2ヵ月以上経った今でも、回収作業が終わっていないどころか
未だに毎日流出は続いており、
既に「史上最悪の原油流出事故」と言われています。

環境への影響や原油回収の状況、
英ＢＰへの批判、アメリカ政府の対応、処理費用の負担などなど

この事故に関連するニュースは
日本のメディアでも頻繁に取り上げられていますが、

海外メディアの関心度は更に高く、
連日のように様々な角度から報じられています。

今日はそれらの中から、

In the May 16, 2010 Daily Yomiuri, we had the following headline:
Sticky-fingered prelate's treasure

This story was originally written for England’s The Times newspaper, with the headline:
Palace unveils historic hoard of a sticky-fingered prelate

A “prelate” is someone in the Catholic church who holds a specific religious office, such as “bishop” or “archbishop”. The newspaper article refers to one specific person – Archbishop Richard Bancroft, founder of the Lambeth Palace Library.

Prelate Bancroft would ask people to give him books and rare letters and artwork to be displayed in his library, but then he would fail to return the items to their owners. Normally, we would call someone that takes things and doesn’t return them “a thief”. However, “thief” can be a fairly strong word and occasionally we want to soften the meaning by “glossing over” the person’s actions, or “varnishing the truth”. In the case of the above article, the writer uses “sticky fingers” to imply the action of “theft”.

Varnish is a liquid that is applied to wood to make it look shiny and to bring out the darker colors of the wood. In other words, varnish makes the wood glossy. Therefore, when we hide a person’s flaws, we are glossing over their flaws, or varnishing the truth regarding those flaws.

If you eat an orange and the juice gets on your hands, your hands will become sticky. Then, if you touch a piece of paper or clumps of dirt, it will stick to your hand and become hard to remove. That is, you will have “sticky fingers”. Symbolically, we use “sticky fingers” to mean that once you take something valuable you will not want to return it. In other words, “a thief is someone that has ‘sticky fingers’”.

To be more blatant, and unvarnished, the Daily Yomiuri headline would read “Treasure Stolen by Thieving Archbishop”. But, this version may be too offensive to some readers, which is why the headline was “varnished” a bit.

As you read the English newspapers, try to find more examples of “glossing over the details” in the stories.

Hands-on

Hands-on – an adjective to describe a person who gets involved or an activity which allows or requires people to get into doing it; as opposed to something that you can watch or a person who supervises. Generally this is a positive trait in a manager for example.

“I really respect our new manager because he is very hands-on.”

Conversation 1

Employee 1: Have you had a chance to work with the new Supervisor yet?

Employee 2: Yeah he is great! I think he is going to really help the company achieve it’s goals.

Employee 1: What do you mean, he is just a manager. It is the average employee who contributes the most to our success.

Manager: Honestly, I agree but he is very hands-on. He was down on the floor for 3 hours helping us yesterday. I think the fact that he likes getting involved in the work will help him get the respect of the team and productivity will improve.

Employee 2: I hope you are right, that is the kind of manager we need around here.

Conversation 2

Manager: Good morning team. Thank you for coming to this meeting. As you know there have been some issues with the new design and we need your help to get back on track.

Employee: I think we are almost there now. We have worked out most of the design flaws but I think we should discuss how to avoid this happening again.

Manager: Well, I am glad to hear that you have worked out the issues and I totally agree that we need to learn from this. Do you have any suggestions?

Employee: I think the designers should come down to the factory more often. If they were more hands-on here they would be able to understand how the designs can impact the production and vice-versa.

Manager: That is not a bad idea. Let’s put a proposal together.

In the May 11, 2010 Daily Yomiuri, we had the following headlines:

Bridging the divides (regarding military action in Afghanistan)
Japan must bridge divide over genetic resources

You are probably familiar with the word divide as it is used in arithmetic, as in dividing one number by another (12 divided by 3 equals 4). A second meaning is to separate groups of something from other members, as in “dividing a high school class by athletic ability”, or “dividing school clubs by the number of their members”.

Yet a third, related meaning is “a valley”, in that a valley “divides” two hills from each other. When we stand on top of one hill, we can look over the valley, or “the divide” to see the other hill. “A divide” can have the symbolic meaning of “the difference in opinion or in resources between two groups”. Currently, there is a political divide between the democrats and the republicans in the U.S. concerning education, spending and religious principles. That is, there is a “gap” between the opinions of democrats and republicans.

When there is a gap between two groups, those groups stop talking to each other, and often will start fighting each other. To get the two groups to stop fighting and start talking again, we need to close that gap between them. As with the above two people standing on opposite hills, we “build a bridge across the valley from one hill to the other”, or in other words, “we bridge the divide” between them.

With the above story headline “Bridging the divides”, the author is specifically referring to the need to get two strong U.S. military leaders to work together in spite of their opinions as to the best way to conduct operations in Afghanistan. The two men have stopped working together because of their opinions, and it is important to get them to talk to each other again in spite of their differences.

In contrast, the headline “Japan must bridge divide over genetic resources”, has an error in the wording. The story discusses an imbalance between groups of genetic researchers that do not all receive equal amounts of funding. That is, the “gap” is between research groups that receive lots of government funding, and groups that receive little funding. To close the gap, money to fund the groups should be distributed more evenly. To be more correct, the headline should be changed to “Japan must bridge divide in genetic funding” or “Japan must bridge over genetic funding divide”.

“Resources” in this headline refers to money, people, equipment and buildings. But the story only talks about uneven distribution of money. For this reason, using “resources” is misleading. The headline should use “funding” or “money” instead.

As you read the English newspapers, try to find more examples of “divides” and “gaps” in the stories.

In the dark

In the dark – having no knowledge of something. You are in the dark when you have been told nothing of the situation. Often we use it to explain why we cannot answer a question.

“I am sorry that I cannot answer your question but I am afraid I am completely in the dark.”

Conversation 1

Employee 1: I just heard about the big staff meeting this afternoon. It sounds important do you know what it is all about?

Employee 2: I have no idea, they announced it this morning and said that attendance is mandatory for all staff. Let’s ask the boss?

Employee 1: Hey boss, we are curious about the meeting this afternoon. What can we expect.

Manager: Honestly, I am completely in the dark. I was invited this morning as well and told to make sure everyone attends. Other than that I know nothing. Sorry.

Employee 2: No problem, hopefully it is nothing serious.

Conversation 2

Manager: Good morning team. I noticed this morning that we are behind schedule with the project. Is there a problem that we need to solve?

Employee: No it is just the additional demands of the other project that has us behind.

Manager: Other project? What other project are you working on?

Employee: The Director of Marketing has asked us to develop this new product for the 2011 Trade Show.

Manager: OK, thanks. Sorry for that. Maybe I should call in some extra staff to get us back on schedule.

Later that day…

Manager: Hey Larry, can you spare a moment?

Larry: Sure what is up?

Manager: I was surprised to learn from my team that we are working on a project for the 2011 Trade Show.

Larry: Yeah, I need a rush job done. Is that a problem?

Manager: We should be able to get it done for you but I felt like I was kept in the dark on this. Can you speak to me first in the future? I will see that we are better prepared to help you and stay on schedule with our other jobs.
