２回目の今日は、可能性を表現する英語のフレーズを
Curtis講師がご紹介いたします。
※今回ご紹介するフレーズはCasualな場面向きです。

Phrases indicating probability

It’s in the bag.
It’s a lock.
As good as done.
A done deal.
Sure shot.
Hands down.
Meaning: 100% chance of occurrence, guaranteed.
Example:
“Did you make the sale?” “It’s in the bag. They promised to sign the contract tomorrow, so it’s as good as done.”

A good chance
Meaning: more than a 50% chance, likely
Not much of a chance
Meaning: less than a 10% chance, highly unlikely
Example:
“There’s a good chance that we’ll get rain on the weekend, and there’s not much of a chance of getting vacation time to do cherry blossom viewing during the week.”
------------------------------------
Don’t have a ghost of a chance
Not a chance
No chance
A snowball’s chance (in hell)
Not going to happen
When pigs fly
Meaning: 0% chance of occurrence, zilch or nada.
Example:
“Did you get them to agree to the changes?” “Not going to happen. They’ve made the project status a requirement of our contract. If they don’t like the project as it is, there’s a snowball’s chance (in hell) of our getting the contract renewed.”

これらの言い回しは、
同僚や友人と話す時だけに使った方が無難です。
様々な言い回しを覚えると
相手の言っていることもより正確に理解できますし、
Yes! No! だけでなく、ニュアンスも伝えられるようになります。
ウィットに富んだ表現を使えたら、
きっと会話も盛り上がりますね。
