８月7日、国際バスケット連盟の理事会が東京で開かれ
「2019年男子ワールドカップ」は中国で開催することが決定した。
開催を目指していたフィリピンは
世界的に有名なプロボクサー、マニー・パッキャオさんや
ハリウッド俳優のルー・ダイヤモンド・フィリップスさんが
招致を訴えたが叶わなかったようです。
フィリピンでバスケットボールといえば
1975年に発足した、アジア最古のバスケットボールリーグであり
世界的にもNBAに次ぐ歴史がある。
フィリピンは長らくアメリカの植民地だった事から
バスケットボールが他のアジア諸国に比べ盛んであり
PBAもまた国民的スポーツとして人気が極めて高い。
