一度も稼働せずに観光施設化されたフィリピンのバターン原子力発電所。
中央制御室には1980年代の設備がそのまま残っている。
バターン原発へは、首都マニラから車で約3時間。
見学料は150フィリピンペソ（約260円）で
近くのプライベートビーチも使用可能だ。
見学ツアーは、バターン原発の安全性の説明から始まる。
例えば、2011年3月11日に福島第一原発を襲った
地震と同程度の揺れにも耐えられる設計だという。
次に、案内を受けながら原発内の主要施設を回る。
「原子炉、蒸気発生器、制御室、タービン発電機などを見られる。
放射性物質はすべて運び出されているため
放射線被曝の危険はない」と
フィリピン国家電力公社（NPC）のマウロ・マルセロ氏は説明する。
