虐殺事件
第二次世界大戦のフィリピン戦では
日本軍によるゲリラ掃討を名目とする住民虐殺が全土で多発したが
その中でも、マニラ南方のラグナ州とバタンガス州で引き起こされた
虐殺事件は大規模なものであった。
１９４５年２月初め、米軍がこの地域に進攻して来た時に始まり
日本軍の兵団が敗北して撤退するまでの１カ月半続いた。
この中でも、最大の被害があったのはリパ市であった。
３月４日に、リパ市ルンバンで起こった虐殺事件は特に大規模で
約１５００人の住民が殺害され、村は抹殺されたという。
万聖節の１日、フィリピン各地の公共墓地では
花束やロウソクを手にした墓参りの家族連れでにぎわった。
しかし、ルソン地方バタンガス州リパ市のバナナ畑にある古井戸の跡地では
地元に住む男性が、65年前に日本軍に殺された父親のため
に静かに冥福を祈っていた。
私の妻のおじいさんも、この日本軍の大虐殺で、殺されたという
初めて妻の実家に行ったときに聞かされ
同じ日本人として、「ほんとうに、申し訳ない」という気持ちでいっぱいになったことを
今でも、忘れることは出来ません。
