With her knee-length dresses, matching or contrasting coats, eye-catching hats, sensible shoes, gloves and compulsory top-handle handbags, Her Maj has settled on a look that is both flattering and practical.

Where she is more daring is in her choice of colours. There are few women of any age, let alone 86, who have the confidence to step out in dazzling fuchsia one day, bright lemon another and head-to-toe scarlet the next.

As luck would have it this is a very good time to try channelling the Queen's classic style. The high street is awash with all the colours she loves, pastels in myriad shades and bold, zingy spring colours to brighten the dullest day.

To take full advantage of the new season shades and the fact we are in full Diamond Jubilee mode, John Lewis stores around the country are offering a Figurehead Fashion Advice service until June 5.

Jo Hooper, head of John Lewis womenswear buying, explains: "The lead up to the jubilee is the perfect time to celebrate the Queen's chic fashion sense.

"The spring/summer catwalks showcased her favourite ice-cream pastel shades and ladylike silhouettes."

Keen to discover whether I can carry off HM's regal style I booked my free one-hour appointment with Letara Buckley, fashion adviser at John Lewis Oxford Street. Using a colour chart Letara quickly established that my complexion is best suited to the "spring" range of shades, mauve, light green, subtle pinks and yellows and orange. (The Queen falls into the summer range hence her ability to wear vivid colours.)

Letara scooped up a range of colourful clothes and accessories for me to try. A canary yellow mini-dress plus orange swing coat were not items I would ever have picked from the rails but they looked surprisingly good on.
