辭國少年千里行
南洋負笈曉星迎
殊方已破鯤鵬浪
異域初成鸞鳳聲
椰雨侵窗硯水碧
鯨波躍日海雲明
芸編誰繼垂白意
獨倚松筠望雁征

南洋に笈（おい）を負いて 暁星を迎う。
殊方（しゅほう）すでに鯤鵬（こんほう）の浪を破り、
異域はじめて鸞鳳（らんぽう）の声を成す。
椰雨（やう）窗（まど）を侵して 硯水（けんすい）碧（あお）く、
鯨波（げいは）日を躍して 海雲（かいうん）明らかなり。
芸編（げいへん）誰か継がん 垂白の意。
独り松筠（しょういん）に倚りて 雁の征くを望む。

日本を旅立った少年は、千里の道を往き、
南洋で書物を背負って学び、暁の星を仰いでは勤学に励んだ。
異郷にあって、すでに大海を行く鯤・鵬のように雄々しく活躍し、
外国の地にて、初めて鸞・鳳の声のような優れた才能を現した。
椰子の雨は窓を打ち、硯の水は青く澄み、
鯨の跳ねる波間には日が輝き、海の雲は明るい。
私の学問を、誰がこの白髪の老いの志を継いでくれるのだろうか。
私はただ松竹の下にたたずみ、雁の旅立ち（甥の再びの門出）を見送っている

The boy who left his homeland far away
Has travelled on through thousand-mile-long air;
In Southern seas he studied night and day,
And greeted dawn beneath a lone star’s glare.
In foreign realms he rose with lofty aim,
Like Kun and Peng that cleave the boundless tide;
His phoenix-voice first won its newborn fame,
And rang abroad with resonant, shining pride.
The palm-tree rain tapped softly at his pane,
While ink-stone waters glimmered deep and blue;
The whale-waves danced beneath the sun’s domain,
And sea-clouds blazed in radiant morning hue.
Who now shall take this white-haired will of mine—
My books, my thought, my slowly setting flame?
Alone by bamboo, leaning on the pine,
I watch the geese depart the way he came.
