今朝ラジオTokyo FM でもお話しましたが、今週はモントルー・ジャズ・フェスティバルに招待されスイスに行ってきました！
私の母はモントルー出身なので、モントルーの街は何度も行っていますが、フェスは意外に初めてでした！
今回で51回目を迎えたこのフェスは世界的にも有名なフェスです。名前にあるようにもともとはジャズのフェスでした。有名なアーティストを迎え、今はジャズのみならずオールジャンルのフェスです。今世界をリードしているミュージシャン、レジェンド、そしてこれから期待の新人も出演しています。
今年は２週間にわたって行われていますのでアーティストも多いです。トム・ジョーンズ、エリカ・バデゥ、ハービー・ハンコックなどなどトップスターばかり。私はそのうち４日間フェスに参加出来ました！
As I spoke about on today's radio program on Tokyo FM, this week, I went to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland! My mother is from Montreux, so I have been to the town countless times, but actually it was my first time at the festival itself!
MJF is a world renowned festival which marked it’s 51st anniversary this year. It originally started as a jazz festival welcoming big names in the jazz world, but now, the festival has grown to show all sorts of genres of music. It has become a famous festival where top musicians want to participate as well as showcasing new up and coming rising stars.
The festival usually lasts about 2 full weeks so you can imagine the huge lineup. This year as well there were incredible artists like Tom Jones, Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock..., Within the 16 days, I was able to attend 4 days!
ジュネーブ空港に到着して、ホテルに荷物を置いてすぐに会場に行きました。そこで早速グレース・ジョーンズ！時差ぼけの中かなり衝撃的なライブでした！ジャマイカ出身の彼女は女優とモデルとしても有名ですよね。グレース・ジョーンズのライブは違う世界でした！ステージにはスカルのマスクを付けて登場。そして、よーく見ると何と彼女はほぼはだかでボディーペイントが塗ってありました。69歳とは信じられないです！音楽も不思議でビートかっこいいです。
We dropped our luggage at the hotel right after arriving at Geneva airport and headed straight to the festival. In my severe jet lagged state, I went to see Grace Jones, and wow! It was such a surreal experience. She appeared on stage with a skull mask looking quite scary and then upon further view I realised that she was naked except for body paint! She is unbelievable for a 69 year old. What an amazing body. You may know her from her acting or modelling but she is truly an artist as well.
二日目は雨が降りましたが、またまた豪華なライブを見れました。
まずは、ブライアン・フェリー。背が高くてとてもダンディなクルーナーでした！スムーズでかっこいい声。そして、次はビーチ・ボイズのブライアン・ウィルソン。レジェンドです！最高に楽しい曲ばかりでお客さんも懐かしい曲にたくさん踊っていました！「グッド・ヴァイブレーション」とか！
On my second day, despite the rain there were once again fantastic shows.
Firstly Bryan Ferry. What a handsome crooner! I love his sexy smooth voice. Then right after was Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys). What a true legend. The performance was so joyful, upbeat and full of positivity. People couldn't help but to dance along to old hits like “Good Vibration”.
モントルージャズフェスのすごいところはチケットがなくても楽しめるところです。レイクサイドの屋台や物売り場はだれでも行けます！お祭りの雰囲気です！フリーステージもありまして、常に音楽が聴けます。
The cool part of Montreux Jazz Festival is that you can also enjoy without having a ticket. You can walk along the lake and enjoy all the food stands and the market. It’s a summer festival! There are also free stages where you can always enjoy some music.
三日目のライナップはもっと若いアーティストが出演。まずはキルズ！ロックな女性ボーカルが印象的でした。
The third day had some younger artists. Firstly I saw The Kills. Great to hear some good rock with such strong female vocals.
そして、イギリス出身のロックバンド、カサビアン！昔から大ファンですが、意外にまだライブは見た事がなかったんですよ！さすがに盛り上がりました。ギターのセルジオ、そして、ボーカルのトム！かっこいいです。トムは医者が着るような白いジャケットでユニークなファッションでした。トムはステージでは自信たっぷりで歩き方もパワフルでした。
Then KASABIAN. I’ve been a huge fan for a while but actually never saw them live. It was such a crowd pleaser and wow, what energy. Sergio and Tom really brought it. I loved the doctor-like white jacket Tom had on, and am obsessed with his swagger walk on stage!
翌日はイギリス出身のライジングスター、サンファ！ニューエイジヒーローです。あのパワフルな声をストラビンスキーホールで聴けたのは本当にラッキーです。彼は今年の夏来日もします！出来れば観てください！今回のフェスの私の中でのベストアクトかもしれないです！
また別のステージでイギリス・ブライトン出身のロイヤルブラッドも少し観れました！これもびっくり！どうやってギターとドラムだけでこんなに音ができるんだろう！迫力あります。楽器が１０人ぐらいかな〜と思えるぐらいな音を２人で鳴らしています。ボーカルもかなりのイケメンです。
The following day, I saw Sampha from the UK. His voice was so full and strong and what a treat to hear in the Stravinsky hall which is famous for it’s sound system. I loved Sampha. I plan to listen to him on repeat when I get home. He will also be in Japan this summer so you have got to see him if you have the chance.
Then I jumped into a different hall where Royal Blood were performing. It’s really incredible how much sound they can make with just a guitar and drums. Their rock music sounds like there could be ten musicians on stage!
その次すぐにビヨンセの妹、ソランジュ、そしてエリカ・バデゥと、ビユティフルヴォイスのアーティスト。エリカ・バデゥのショーはまさかのテクニカル問題で４５分もの遅れがありました。バンドも完璧なサウンドでやりたいと言う事で、３回オープニングをやり直し！！プロだな〜！そんな中エリカ様がものすごい衣装でステージに登場！なんてクールなんだろう！エリカ・バデゥは王女様です！あの音のタイミングやセンスは天才ですね。お客さんは幻を観ているように魅了されていました！私も！
Then the beautiful Solange and Erykah Badu with their gorgeous voices. For Erykah Badu due to some technical issues, she was 45 minutes late to start. The band restarted their opening number 3 times to get it right and then Erykah’s entrance was really magical. She has such strong stage presence. I love her sense of timing, what a genius. The audience was really mesmerised as was myself by her show.
