昨日に引き続き、動物シリーズです
アメリカの友人が庭でニワトリを飼っていて、Sparkle, Rainbowなどキラキラネームを付けてかわいがっています
よく写真を送ってくれるのですが、それらを見て娘が疑問を持ちました。
"How can hens lay eggs without a rooster?"
（雌鶏＝hen、雄鶏＝rooster）
何でだろうかと英語で調べてみると…、
Hens will lay eggs regardless of whether or not they are being kept in the company of a rooster. Hen's body is naturally intended to produce an egg once every 24 to 27 hours and it will form the egg regardless of whether the egg is actively fertilized during its formation.
つまり、人間の女性が毎月排卵しているように、ニワトリさんは24-27時間ごとに排卵している、っていうことで、オスがいなくても卵が産めて、それは無精卵というわけなんですね。
こう説明したのはいいですが、
娘："Wait, what!? You lay an egg every month!?"
なんか、話がややこしくなってきたので、はぐらかしておきました
