Setsubun
February 3rd is Setsubun.
Setsubun is a Japanese traditional event.
Setsubun means division of the seasons between winter and spring in the old Japanese calendar.
On this day, people throw roasted soy beans to drive out evil sprits and invite good luck.
When throwing the beans, they shout
"Oni wa soto ! Fuku wa uchi !"
It means, "Devil out ! Fortune in !"
There are some throwing beans events at shrines and temples.
Afterwords people eat the same number of beans as their age to wish for their health.
Then eating a special sushi roll, which is called Ehomaki, is a popular custom on Setsubun.
People face a lucky direction and, wishing for good health, bite into the whole roll.
This custom is said to have started in the Edo period in Osaka.
