Currently, the tournament is scheduled to take place in the height of summer, when temperatures in the Gulf region can reach highs of 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit).
The new study will no doubt add further weight to the growing argument that the tournament should be switched to the months winter where temperatures in Qatar are markedly cooler, with highs of 24 degrees Celsius and lows of 15 degrees.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter recently expressed his desire for such a move to occur: "The Fifa World Cup must be a festival of the people, but, for it to be such a festival, you can't play football in the summer. The players must be able to play in the best conditions to play a good World Cup."
Blatter will argue that the University's findings merely reinforces his claims that the tournament should be moved, as there will simply not be time for competing countries to allow for a month of acclimalisation.

However, the proposal to make Qatar 2022 the first winter World Cup is something that is strongly opposed by many of Europe's top leagues, who feel that shifting the tournament's dates would cause a logistical nightmare as many do not have the provision for a winter break.
Indeed Richard Scudamore, the Premier League's chief executive, stated that it would be "nigh impossible" for the World Cup to be moved to the winter, whilst backing Qatar's ability to stage the football extravaganza in the summer.
Such strong opposition to a winter tournament has even led former FA chairman David Bernstein to suggest "there should be a re-bidding process", an idea FIFA would want to avoid.
FIFA executives are set examine all possible proposals over Qatar 2022 when they convene in Zurich at an executive committee meeting.
