The temperatures in Valencia blew hot and cold for Ocean Racing Technology today for the second race of the GP2 Main Series weekend. Álvaro Parente was virtually on the podium when his race brutally ended following an error from Edoardo Mortara, who badly calculated his braking distance and caused a collision with the Portuguese racer. Meanwhile, Karun Chandhok had one of his best races of the season when he crossed the finish line in the points with a 6th position, after a brilliant run from 21st on the grid.

Ocean Racing Technology showed their initial competitiveness with Álvaro Parente, author of a spectacular start that saw him go from fifth to third. Alas, he soon became an innocent victim of Mortara's error when he locked a wheel under braking into the second turn and forced Álvaro to slow and lose several places. Falling back to 6th, the driver of car number 25 climbed back to 3rd place by the fifth lap and quickly proved that he was faster than the driver in front of him. But, at the time of a new start following a safety car period, Mortara made yet another error and nullified all of Parente's efforts. "It is one of those situations where you can't do anything about it and it is a shame because the podium was ours. Everything was perfect; I had my best start of the season and I could have taken the lead had I not had to avoid the chaos in the two first turns. This DNF is excessively frustrating because it is the consequence of an event where I was powerless. After the safety car, Mortara made an unwise manoeuvre which cost him a drive through penalty but which cost me my race and maybe the best result for the team this year," explained Parente, who leaves Valencia with the points from 4th place secured in race one yesterday.

Meanwhile, teammate Karun Chandhok also contributed to the value of Ocean Racing Technology when following a DNF in the first race due to a collision caused by Davide Valsecchi, the Indian driver was left to start from the rear of the grid in 21st place for race two. However Karun was already up to 13th by lap two and 9th six laps later, before moving up yet another three places and defending the final points position from attacks by Davide Rigon. "It was an interesting and constructive race because we've been able to show what our level of competitiveness is. On a street circuit and with so many safety car periods, it was impossible to do any better! On one hand it is a good sign but on the other it is frustrating because my race showed that I could have secured a very good result in the second race if I could have been able to take the chequered flag in the first one. We are heading into the right direction but honestly I think we had our share of misfortune and I hope the last part of the championship will allow us to translate our competitiveness into great results," he said.

The three last rounds of the GP2 Main Series will take place in the next month, starting from next weekend when Ocean Racing Technology will race on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit where the GP2 Main Series will once again share the paddock with Formula 1.

Álvaro Parente capitalized perfectly on his 6th place on the grid of the difficult street layout of Valencia today when he drove a brilliant race to finish at the foot of the podium in fourth place. Unfortunately teammate Karun Chandhok, who was just as competitive and seized the final point and virtual position for race two, was forced to retire with just five laps to go.

Álvaro Parente drove an intelligent race on a difficult track that claimed many victims. Being careful at the beginning while at the same time making the most of the situation, the Portuguese driver made the best use of his car and fought from start to finish. He gained one place at the start and was faster than the drivers who were in front of him before his compulsory pit stop. Although he lost a position in the pits, he then put Rodriguez and Di Grassi under pressure in order to get past them. Álvaro believes that on a circuit that was more favourable to overtaking, the podium would have been within his grasp. "Like all the street circuits, Valencia is not a best friend of overtaking even though it has some large run off areas. I had a good start and I immediately realized that I could have very good race pace. The pit stop was not perfect and although I lost a position I got it back on track. The fights were the highlights of my race, they were fierce with Rodriguez and di Grassi but I won them," Parente explained. "It is a great result which opens up further prospects for Sunday's race."

Eighth on the starting grid, teammate Karun Chandhok fought for points throughout the race but the duel with Davide Valsecchi proved to be fatal... "He knew he had the upperhand because he could brake later, but when I successfully attacked him, he slammed the door and the contact badly damaged my car," regretted Chandhok. "It was a racing incident that is hard to take because the car was competitive at the beginning of the race and I was in the same league as Álvaro. Then I lost some ground with the second set of tyres because I needed time to reach their ideal working temperature. Once it was done my race pace was the same as at the start. I know the second race will be a tough one."

Not able to take the chequered flag in race one means that Chandhok will be forced to start the second race from the back of the grid while Álvaro Parente will start from 5th place on the grid.

Thanks to today's result, Ocean Racing Technology is now 8th in the teams' championship, five points adrift of 5th place.

The second race of the GP2 Main Series will be broadcasted live by Eurosport, tomorrow at 9:30AM (UK Time).
