THE NEW KOREA（朝鮮が劇的に豊かになった時代）

この韓国論は、２０世紀前半に於いて世界的に著名であった植民地研究者であるアレン・アイルランド氏によって書かれたもので、１９２６年にE.P. Dutton社から出版されたものである。この度桜の花

出版社が、日本語訳をつけて再刊した。

アイルランド氏はなぜ、日本の朝鮮統治を研究したのか。氏は「ある文明化された民族がもう一つの文明化された民族を統治したという稀有な光景を見せてくれる」

からだと書いている。

氏は客観的な視点に立って、日本政府が朝鮮統治で何を目指し、どのような方法を採用したのか、結果はどうだったのかを事実を通して明らかにすることを第一の目標としたと述べている。その結果は、タイトルにあるように、「劇的に豊かになった時代」の「New Korea」「新しい朝鮮」をもたらしたのである。

国家基本問題研究所理事長の櫻井よしこ氏がこの本のレビューを平成２６年１月２３日号の『週刊新潮』の連載コラム「日本のルネッサンス」に載せている。題して「英国人学者が高く評価した韓国併合」。

本書の紹介としてこれに勝るものなしと思い櫻井氏にお願いしたところ、心よくこの文章の掲載をご了解いただいた。

Alleyne Ireland was a British Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society

and leading expert on colonial policies in East Asia during the early 20th

century. His comprehensive study on Japanese rule of Korea is an objective

view on this issue.

Ms. Sakurai Yoshiko, journalist and President of Japan Institute for

National Fundamentals, wrote a review essay on this book titled “Japan‘s

Annexation of Korea Given High Marks by Prominent British Scholar” in the

January 23, 2014 issue of The Weekly Shincho. An English translation of this

essay has been published on her official site.
