#20 金沢大学 文系前期 英語 第II問
さあ今日も英語の入試問題を使って「正しく比較する」練習をしてみましょう。今回は、旧制第四高校の流れを汲む歴史ある名門、金沢大学の入試問題です。いわゆる長文問題ですが、受験生のために実際、試験場で長文問題に取り組むときに、効率のよい手順を紹介しながら見てみましょう。この「効率のいい手順」はどの大学や高校の入試問題でも当てはまりますので、金沢大学を受けない方も是非、参考にして下さい。長文問題は、制限時間との勝負です。だから1分でも早く、その文章が何について書かれているのか掴まなければなりません。それにはタイトルを見るのが一番です。タイトルは文章全体について何についての話かを表しているからです。一方で各パラグラフごとにも、中心となる topic sentence がありますが、そのパラグラフに書かれている内容しか代表していません。ですから、もし「この文章のタイトルに相応しいものを次の中から選びなさい」という問題があれば、ひとつのパラグラフだけではなく、すべてのパラグラフつまり文章全体について関係があるものを選ぶことになります。今回の金沢大学の問題には文頭に、ずばり全体の要旨を教えてくれるタイトルがありました。'21 金沢大学 文系前期 英語 第II問 "Dogs evolved a Special Muscle that Lets Them Make 'Puppy Eyes'"「Dogs evolved 犬は進化させた、 a Special Muscle ある筋肉を、 that Lets Them Make 'Puppy Eyes' それは'子犬の目'にさせる」 ことについての文章だとわかります。ちなみに、この英語長文はSmithsonianのウェブサイトにも掲載されていますので、金沢大学の過去問をお持ちでない方も、どうぞご一緒に読みながら参加してください。https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/dogs-have-special-muscle-lets-them-make-puppy-dog-eyes-180972440/またYoutubeにも関連する動画がいくつかありますので、是非、アクセスして可愛いワンちゃんの 'Puppy Eyes'をご覧ください。Lab Break: Why Are Puppy Dog Eyes So Effective?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fHGNvsnqvMHow Puppy Dog Eyes Evolved to Match Humanshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrA5c3vllksさてタイトルの次に、見ておくのが語註です。大学受験生にはちょっと難しすぎると思われる単語についての説明ですが、文の要旨を理解するうえで、どうでもいい単語より、重要な単語に付いていることが多いのでざっと目を通しておきましょう。canine companions : pet dogs （どうでもいいことですが、犬を飼ってるアメリカ人の友人が canine を K-9 と洒落で書いてるのをよく見かけました。発音が同じだからですね。）cadavers : dead bodiestaxidermists : people who stuff animals for display purposesタイトルと語註を押さえたら、次は「設問」を見ます。入試問題は設問を解くのが最終目的です。そして時間との闘いでもあります。だから1分でも早く「設問」で訊かれている情報を取り出して答えなければなりませんので、まず本文を読み始める前に設問を見ます。ただし、4つの選択肢から内容に合っているものひとつを選ぶ問題や、True or False 問題は、最初に見ない方が無難です。前者は4つのうち３つは間違っているわけですし、後者も半分近くの選択肢が嘘の可能性があり、難関大学ほどウマく引っ掛かるように作ってますから、かえって本文を誤読してしまう原因になりかねないからです。どうしても見ておきたい人は、それぞれの文の「主語」だけ押さえておくといいのではないでしょうか。今回の金沢大学の設問は第 I 問が、短文で回答する形式、第 II 問 Question 2 が True or False 問題ですので、第 I 問だけ先読みすることにします。Question 1: Based on the passage, answer questions (A) to (D) with one complete sentence in English. Your answers should not be more than 25 words each.(A) In human-dog interaction, what is the effect of puppy dog eyes?「 the effect 影響 of puppy dog eyes の」が、質問の中心ですね。そこで # puppy dog eyes に心の中でハッシュタグをつけて（受験生なら鉛筆でマルするだけでもいいです）、本文を読むときに関連する文を探す手がかりにしましょう。なお、" the effect " とありますから、これから見つける effect は、ひとつでいいんですよね。（参照：# 19 あれしかない「 the 」と、他にもある「 a 」）(B) What are the differences between dogs and wolves in terms of eye muscles?# differences between dogs and wolves / # eye muscles にハッシュタグをつけましょう。それぞれ differences と muscles が複数形ですから今度は訊かれていることが、ひとつではないんですね。 (C) What did the researchers examine in the behavioral study compairing shelter dogs and wolves in captivity.# behavioral study / # compairing shelter dogs and wolves in captivity にハッシュタグ。「 compairing 」キターーーー！(笑)。 （動物）行動学の調査研究について訊いてるんですが、その研究内容は 保護された dogs と wolves の比較なんですね。 皆さんが練習した「正しく比較する力」をここでも存分に発揮してください！(D) In their 2013 study, what did Kaminski and her colleagues discover?次は# 2013 study / # Kaminski の調査結果を訊いてるんで、この単語にハッシュタグ。さあ、準備が整ったところで、本文を読みましょう。"Dogs evolved a Special Muscle that Lets Them Make 'Puppy Eyes'"https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/dogs-have-special-muscle-lets-them-make-puppy-dog-eyes-180972440/設問(A) In human-dog interaction, what is the effect of puppy dog eyes? で訊かれている the effect が早速、¶１ にありましたよ。 Dogs have a secret weapon when it comes to getting what they want or getting out of trouble: puppy dog eyes....When our canine companions raise their eyebrows, making their eyes look wider, more helpless and baby-like, it seems the facial expression was designed to manipulate human emotions.「 puppy dog eyes 」の paraphrase （言い換え）が、 a secret weapon / making their eyes look wider, more helpless and baby-like. それは getting what they want or getting out of trouble / to manipulate human emotions という意図に基づいてdesignされた、と言ってます。そこで答えは、Puppy dog eyes can manipulate human emotions for the pourpose of getting what they want or getting out of trouble. (20 words) など如何でしょう。ちなみに教学社の赤本は、Human emotions are manipulated by puppy dog eyes, which enables dogs to get what they want or get out of trouble.なお、設問に、Your answers should not be more than 25 words each. とあるので絶対に制限字数内におさめましょう。超えると大幅減点か、もしかしたら０点かもしれませんので。では、(B) What are the differences between dogs and wolves in terms of eye muscles?「the differences」ですから、違いは複数。そして「between dogs and wolves」の比較キターーー！ もういいですね(笑)。¶4に、以下の文章がありましたよ。They found that the dog breeds—including a chihuahua, a labrador, a bloodhound, a German shepherd, a Siberian husky and a mutt—all had a small, specialized muscle called the levator anguli oculi medialis, or LAOM, which they use to produce their wide-eyed, doleful stare. In the four wolves that were looked at, the muscle did not exist—save for a few stray fibers. Another muscle, called the retractor anguli oculi lateralis or RAOM, which pulls the eyelids toward the ears, was well developed in all the dogs except the husky, a breed with an ancient lineage. (25 words)なお、設問は「 What are the differences... 」と、複数の違いを訊いているのに、赤本の解答は、LAOMについてしか述べていませんので、模範解答として不十分ではないかと思います。(赤本解答 : Dogs have a specialized muscle called LAOM, which produces wide-eyed, doleful stare, but wolves do not have this muscle.)さて、今回は名門、金沢大学の本格的な長文問題ですので、説明することがたくさんあって、そろそろ休憩が欲しい頃ですよね。(笑)というわけで続きは次回にいたしましょう。※教学社編集部様へ上記ブログ文中にある通り'21 金沢大学 文系前期 英語 第II問では「 What are the differences ..」と、複数の違いを訊いています。しかし、教学社『2024年版金沢大学』赤本の解答は、LAOMの有無についての違い「一つ」しか述べていませんので模範解答として不十分ではないでしょうか。(赤本解答 ： Dogs have a specialized muscle called LAOM, which produces wide-eyed, doleful stare, but wolves do not have this muscle.)当方が米国の大学留学中に試験を受ける際、設問が複数形で What are the differences... となっているのに一つしか答えていない場合、減点されました。もし違いがひとつしかない場合、設問は「What is the difference...」と単数形で訊かれます。しかしこれでは違いはひとつしかないというヒントを与えてしまうので、一つかもしれないし複数かもしれない、自分で考えて答えなさい、という意味で、What is/are the difference(s)...と訊く教授が多かったと記憶しております。ですので What are the differences...と質問にあれば複数の違いを答えなければいけないのが暗黙のルールといえます。以上に関して私の様な、どこの馬の骨ともわからぬオッサンに指摘されるのは癪に障ることでしょうが、受験生の将来のためにも、コメントを頂けませんでしょうか。御社の赤本で勉強した人の中には、将来、英語圏へ大学留学する人も少なからずいることと思います。学習者のためを思い僭越ながら問い合わせさせて頂きました。
