Combining the svelteness of an ultraportable with the HP ProBook 4520s Battery screen size of a larger laptop, the Acer TravelMate TimelineX 8481T attempts to deliver the best of both worlds for business users. This sleek system crams a 14-inch display into a 13.3-inch chassis, offers seriously long battery life, and weighs just 4 pounds. Small-business users will also appreciate this Core i5 notebook's solid performance and host of security features. Read on to findHP ProBook 4510s Battery out if Acer has what it takes to take on the best small-business notebooks.

The Acer TravelMate 8481T-6440 has a modern, minimalist design. Aside from the gray brushed-metal Acer logo, the black matte metallic lid is bare, unless you count the scores of fingerprint smudges it gathered as soon as we touched it. The only other ProBook 4515sBattery accents are the chrome-plated hinges.

The TravelMate's interior has the same black metallic motif as the exterior. A chiclet-style keyboard sits in a slightly recessed keyboard deck, while the display is surrounded by an impressively slim bezel. A row of buttons for the Launch Manager, InstantView Manager, Acer BackupProBook 4710s Battery Manager, Microphone audio control, and power sit above the keyboard in the top right-hand corner.

As with Acer's other TimelineX notebooks, the ProBook 4720s Battery TravelMate 8481T is defined by its slim profile. At 4 pounds, it's lighter than competitors such as the 4.6-pound pound Toshiba Tecra R840 and the 4.4-pound Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s. The 8481T's petite 13 x 9.4 x 0.9-inch frame is only slightly smaller than the Tecra R840 (13.4 x 9.4 x 0.8-1.1 inches) as well as the E420s (13.7 x 9.3 x 1.2 inches).

The only thing that mars the 8481T's slimness is its battery, HP 513130-321 which protrudes about an inch out the back of the notebook. However, it tilts the keyboard toward the user, which some may find more comfortable for typing.

The Acer 8481T's island-style keyboard has a generous amount of spacing between the flat keys, which provided solid feedback. We scored 50 words per minute on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test with a one-percent error rate, which is comparable toHP 535808-001 our desktop keyboard score. We noticed that the deck exhibited a tiny amount of flex, but our bigger complaint is that this Timeline lacks a backlit keyboard. A $999 notebook should have one.

The relatively large 3.5 x 2.1-inch Synaptics touchpad allowed us to navigate around the desktop with ease. Gestures such as pinch-to-zoom, two-finger scrolling, and rotation worked well. Highlighting and copying text was a breeze, as was starting and ending slideshows with a three-finger flick HP 591998-141 or launching Google Chrome with three-finger flick.

The two discrete mouse buttons on the Timeline X 8481T felt slightly mushy, but they still managed to be responsive. While we would have preferred that the fingerprint reader was placed somewhere on the palm rest instead of between the mouse buttons, HP 593576-001 we found it unobtrusive.

After streaming videos on Hulu for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured a temperate 88 degrees Fahrenheit while the space between the G and H keys measured 87 degrees. The 8481T's underside was a reasonable 92 degrees; we consider temperatures below 95 degrees HP HSTNN-1B1D comfortable.

Display and Audio

The super-slim bezel on the TimelineX 8481T allowed Acer to cram a 14.1-inch display into a chassis that would normally hold a 13.3-inch panel. Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" video was bright and vivid on the LED-backlit display. Even though matte displays aren't HP HSTNN-OB89 traditionally as rich as glossy screens, the 1366 x 768 screen on the 8481T offered bright cotton-candy pinks and emerald greens; the blacklight scenes at the end of the video were a sassy ultraviolet playland. When we watched The Three Musketeers 1080p full-screen YouTube trailer, the rich reds and opulent golds popped against a crystal-blue sky.

The audio on the TimelineX 8481T left something to be desired. We found ourselvesHP HSTNN-W79C-7 straining to hear movie dialogue. Listening to music was slightly better, but it was not until we enabled the Loudness Equalization feature in the Realtek High Definition Speakers Control Panel that we got respectable sound. While the bass in Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" wasn't exactly super, it was passable and loud enough to fill a small room. Since the speakers are HP HSTNN-XB89 located on the bottom of the laptop, the audio was severely muted when the system was on our lap.Look ma, no glasses! The Toshiba Qosmio F755-S5219 is the company's first glasses-free 3D laptop. Sold exclusively at Best Buy, this 15.6-inch entertainment notebook lets you enjoy movies and photos in 3D without wearing geeky specs. The machine also packs a fast Core i7 processor, Nvidia graphics, and harman/kardon speakers--all wrapped in HP NBP8A157B an eye-catching chassis. But should you shell out $1,699 for the first generation of this new technology?

A bold red plastic lid adorned with a geometric wave pattern makes the Toshiba Qosmio F755 look more like a futuristic sports car than a laptop. While the textured pattern doesn't do much to prevent fingerprints and smudges, we foundHP NZ375AA ourselves constantly rubbing our fingers over the lid. A chrome Qosmio logo rests in the center as an elegant, eye-catching accent. The slick design is a big improvement over the Toshiba's Qosmio X775's garish black-and-red color scheme.

The interior deck is split between a glossy black plastic surrounding the keyboard Pavilion dm4 Battery deck and a glossy plastic palm rest with a gray-and-black pattern reminiscent of herringbone. A wide speaker bar sits above the keyboard surrounding the power button, while a media bar with touch-sensitive buttons for ecoUtility, Wi-Fi, 3D, play/pause, mute, and volume sits directly above the keyboard.

Weighing in at 7 pounds, the 15.3 x 10.5 xPavilion dm4t Battery 1.5-inch Toshiba Qosmio F755 is hefty compared to some 15.6-inch notebooks but fairly portable given all the high-tech components packed into its chassis. Other entertainment laptops are heftier, including the 8.2-pound ASUS G53SW-A1 and the 7.6-pound MSI GT680R-008US. The F755 can easily slip into a medium-size messenger bag or backpack.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The F755's full-size keyboard has large flat black keys and a full number pad that provided firm feedback. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for a thin film to develop on the keys, making them somewhat slippery. Another knock against the keyboard is the small space bar. Despite a lack HP G62 Battery of spacing between keys, we were able to achieve our usual 48 words per minute on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test with a one-percent error rate.

While the 3.5 x 1.75-inch Synaptics touchpad is a bit smaller than we'd like, the slightly gritty surface made navigation a cinch. Pinch-to-zoom and rotate worked smoothly, as did three-finger flicking through photos. You can also press three fingers to launch an HP G62x Battery application, such as Internet Explorer. The F755's chrome-colored mouse buttons were firm without being too loud.

Watching movies and playing games on the 15.6-inch HD TruBrite 1920 x 1080p display was a blast. Explosions were big, bright, and satisfying with red and orange mushroom clouds. Cameron Diaz's vibrant blue eyes and ruby red lipstick popped on The Green Hornet Blu-Ray HP G72 Battery DVD, as did enemies and eminent threats in Kato Vision.

The Qosmio's F755 harman/kardon speakers delivered loud, rich audio with a satisfying amount of bass that easily filled a small room. We heard clear, distinct dialogue while we watched The Green Hornet. We jammed to Kevin Rudoff and Lil Wayne's HP G72T Battery catchy hip-pop vocals on "Let It Rock." We were able to give the guitar and the bass an extra boost using the Dolby Advanced Audio Enhancer. There was a noticeable amount of low-end distortion at full volume, but that went away once we turned the audio down to 75 percent.

The right side of the Qosmio F755 houses two USB 2.0 ports, a Blu-Ray burnerHP G62t Battery , a Sleep-and-Music headphone jack (which allows you to play tunes through the laptop's speakers even when the system is off), and a microphone jack. A USB 3.0 Sleep-and-Charge port with another USB 2.0 port, HDMI, and a VGA port sit on the left. A 7-in-1 card reader is on the front, while a secure lock, Ethernet, and the power jack line the back.

The 1.3-megapixel webcam can HP G62m Battery capture stills and video up to 1280 x 800p resolution. In our office, images came out somewhat dark but had clear detail. Images were brighter under natural light. Our Skype caller reported loud, clear audio with an equally clear image, making it easy for him to read the lettering on our jacket.

After running a full-screen Hulu video for 15 minutes, the touchpad on the Qosmio F755 registered a balmy 88 degrees Fahrenheit. The space between the G and H keys was slightly cooler at 83 degrees, while the underside was a comfortable 80 Pavilion dv3 Battery degrees. We were able to use the notebook on our lap for more than an hour without any discomfort.Windows users don't need to hide in shame whenever they see someone whip out a MacBook Air at the local Starbucks. The ASUS Zenbook UX31 is a slim, stylish Ultrabook that not only packs a robust Core i5 processor and 128GB SSD into its 3-pound unibody aluminum chassis, but a high-res 1600 x 900 display and excellent audio. The super-thinHP Envy 17 Battery laptop also wakes up from sleep almost as soon as you lift the spun-metal lid. Starting at $1,099, the UX31 is one of the sexiest Windows notebooks we've ever seen, and it costs $200 less than the 13-inch MacBook Air. Read on to find out if this machine can take down the champ.

Now, this is what an Ultrabook should look like.Compaq Presario CQ42 Battery From the first moment we saw the ASUS Zenbook UX31, we were immediately taken with the brushed-aluminum chassis and slim design. The circular spun-metal pattern on the lid is slightly darker in color, and the deck has a linear brush pattern. It's subtle, but it's a nice touch. The metal island-style keys are set off by a black background. The hinge area gets its own treatment, Compaq Presario CQ32 Battery with a fine dot pattern and "UX31 Series Ultra Slim" written in script.

Yes, the UX31 looks similar to the 13-inch MacBook Air, but ASUS added enough original elements to make it its own. The UX31's unibody design is certainly far more attractive than the Acer Aspire S3, whose plastic construction felt cheap for a $900 system.Compaq Presario CQ62 Battery At 3 pounds and measuring 13.3 x 8.9 x 0.1-0.7 inches, the UX31 is the same weight as the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook and the 13-inch MacBook Air, but about0.05 inches thicker than both. We didn't really notice the difference.

ASUS bundles the UX31 with a padded Compaq Presario CQ72 Battery brown fabric sleeve, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, and a micro VGA-to-VGA adapter. The adapters also get their own little pouch.

Island-style keyboards are rapidly becoming de rigeur for premium notebooks, and the ASUS UX31 follows suit. We liked the large, well-spaced metal keys, and even though they were flat, our fingers stuck to them well. The arrow keys are smaller than whatHP Pavilion dm4 Battery you'll find on the 13-inch Air, but they were pretty easy to find by feel.

Overall, typing this review on the UX31 was a pleasant experience, but weHP Pavilion DV7 Battery had to hit the keys slightly harder than we're used to make sure the notebook registered all of our presses. What's missing is backlighting, which will be a big omission for some. We also wish ASUS would reverse the function keys so that you could adjust the volume or brightness without having to press Fn first.

Touchpad

Measuring 4.1 x 2.75 inches, the UX31's HP HSTNN-IB0X Sentelic-powered touchpad is almost as large as the MacBook Air's (4.1 x 3 inches) and includes integrated buttons. Navigating the desktop was fairly smooth, but it took us more swipes than we'd like to get from one side of the screen to the other. In addition, sometimes the cursor would jump. Two-finger scrolling was almost too sensitive, and pinch-to-zoom gestures stuttered on Firefox and Internet Explorer. We also had trouble selecting text unless we were very deliberate, though we had better luck when using one finger from each hand.

Prior to writing this review, ASUS provided a firmware update for theHP HSTNN-OB0X touchpad, but we'd say that the company still has work to do.

After streaming a Hulu video at full screen for 15HP HSTNN-YB0X minutes, the touchpad on the UX31 was a cool 76 degrees, the space between the G and H keys was just 81, and the middle of the underside measured 84 degrees. All are well below what we consider uncomfortable--95 degrees.

We were thrilled when we found out that the UX31's 13.3-inch display wouldHP 586006-361 have a resolution of 1600 x 900; it's far more fitting for a premium system than the standard 1366 x 768, and even higher than the MacBook Air's 1440 x 900 panel. We liked that we could see more of web pages and even have two documents open side by side.

When we watched the 1080p trailer forHP 586006-321 The Avengers, explosions were wonderfully fiery, but blacks could be truer, and we noticed some pixelation in darker areas. Also, viewing angles leave something to be desired

You can't see the speakers on the UX31, but they make their presence felt. Audio,HP 593554-001 by Bang & Olufsen's ICEpower and ASUS SonicMaster, radiates from underneath the keyboard, and is not only surprisingly loud, but quite good considering the limitations of the UX31's size.

The cymbals and guitar riffs on the Yeah Yeah HP HSTNN-Q61C Yeah's "Y Control" were relatively free of distortion even at max volume. Bass wasn't overwhelming, but was present. Curiously, the speakers would cause the entire deck to reverberate, especially on thumping dance tracks, such as September's "Cry For You" and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem." Overall, the UX31 offers more robust sound than the 13-inch Air.

One of the requirements that Intel laid down for Ultrabooks is that they be able to HP GSTNN-Q62C boot very quickly and resume nearly instantly from sleep. This requires an SSD. The UX31 booted Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) in a fast 29 seconds, half that of the category average (59 seconds). It was only bested by the MacBook Air, which launched OSX Lion in just 17 seconds, and the Samsung Series 9 (25 seconds).

The Acer Aspire S3 has a 20GB SSD, but that HP WD548AA drive is only used as a hibernation partition for saving memory to disk to enable quick resumes, not for booting or loading applications. All the action, including the bootup, occurs on the mechanical 320GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive, which is why it took a much longer 65 seconds to load Windows.
