【 Nostargia of Richard's Town, Whitby 】
内容 ・・・ Henrietta Street、 セントメアリー教会への１９９階段、East Cliff、 Whitby Harbour 、 Harbourのハクチョウ、Whitbyのゴースト・ウォーク、 古い街並みのレストラン など ・・・
which includes ・・・ Ｈｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ Ｓｔｒｅｅｔ、 199 Steps up to the St. Mary's Church, East Cliff, a Pair of Swans in Whitby Harbour, Richard's Ghost Walk, a Restaurant on an Old Street etc. ・・・
Ｗｈｉｔｂｙ の町を隅々まで知り尽くし、町の多くの人達に愛された親友リチャードと歩いた、繁華な商店街や一緒に食事したレストランなどを、懐かしく思い出しています。

Ｗｈｉｔｂｙの町は、Ｗｈｉｔｂｙ Ｈａｒｂｏｕｒ によって右と左に分かれ、右はEast Cliff、左はWest Cliff と呼ばれています。両側とも崖下か中腹が繁華街になっていて、崖上は静かな教会や修道院、あるいはのどかな住宅地で、どこを歩いてもそれぞれに情緒があり心引かれます。

East Cliff の崖下、Ｗｈｉｔｂｙ Ｈａｒｂｏｕｒ に沿ったSandgate 通りが僕のお気に入りで、端から端までびっちりと連なるジェットの宝石店やお土産屋さんに魅了され、たくさん買い物していきました。買い物をしながら海の方、つまり北に向かい商店街の先まで行き、ちょっと坂を上がると、ここは高価な、しかしシンプルな家が両側に並んだ通りで、ＨENRIETTA STREET という、とても哀愁を感じさせる名前が付けられています。
Henrietta号 という蒸気船が１９世紀半ば、ニューヨークからイギリスのリバープールまで航行した、そんな映画があって、今でもDVDが売られている、といえばジュール・ベルヌ原作の『８０日間世界一周』 であることは明白かもしれません。
これは僕の好きな映画の一つで、主人公、イギリス人 フィリアス・フォッグ Phileas Fogg が従者パスパルトゥ Passepartout とインドのアウーダ姫 Aouda を連れて、ハドソン川からベネズエラ行きの（原作ではボルドー行き）の美しい蒸気船、Ｈｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ号に乗り込みましたが、出港後まもなく、携帯した大きな赤いカバンに詰め込んだ大金で船の全てを買収し、船の目的地をイギリスのリバープールに変更させてしまいました。
さらに全速力で走らせましたので、途中で、当然のごとく燃料の石炭が尽きると、船体の木材、もちろんマスト（当時は蒸気船でも風があれば帆船にもなりました）も燃やして、どうにかイギリスに行くことが出来ました。
この時、木製の船首像 Figure Head まで炉の火中に投げ込むのですが、船長が ” Henrietta、 Henrietta Henrietta ～・・・ ”と叫び悲しんでいたのを、印象深く覚えています。
( At the restaurant " THE SEAFOOD SHACK "along the Sandgate Street under the Cliff, I enjoyed lunch with Richard. The name SHACK sounds curious, for it had a number of tables inside. )
The town Whitby is divided into two parts by the Harbour, which runs from the south to the north; the right side is called East Cliff and the left West Cliff , referring to the landscape.
It seems clear from the name " Cliff " that both sides are steep and the busy streets lie under the hills along the harbour, wherefore shops and restaurants are mainly on narrow streets. Those crowded streets make themselve attractive.
While I was walking around the harbour, there was an exciting encounter, for me, with the street " HENRIETTA " which was under the cliff of St. Mary's Church in the East Side, along over the harbour.
Henrietta, the name makes me recall the steam ship " Henrietta ", which sailed Philias Fogg and an Indian princess Auda and his esquire Passepartout from New York, the US. to Liverpool, Britain, in an old romance movie " Around the World in 80 Days. "
That part of the film was lovely. The prime actor Mr. Fogg longed to get a sea ticket from America to Liverpool. However there were no ships available for Europe, in the movie. Then he only could find one which would go southward to Venezuera, yes, Venezuera, though the destination was Bordour in the original novel.
Without other proper means, they Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout got on that steamer, which was christined " Henrietta . " As they left the Hudson River for the northern tip of South America, he Mr. Fogg, with a huge amount of money, he had carried with him, urged the captain to run as fast as he could, and even forced him to change the destination from Venezuera to Liverpool.
After some high-speed sailing, it ran out of coal naturally. Therefore Mr. Fogg now ordered the crew to remove all the wooden board off the ship into the boiler room. That terrible work helped them go to Liverpool successfully.
At that moment, in front of the mouth of the burning room, the captain cried out so sadly, saying " Henrietta ! Henrietta !!! , " as the figurehead Henrietta was to be hurled into the fire.

( Ｔｈｒｏｕｇｈ ｔｈｅ ｗｈａｌｅ ｂｏｎｅ ａｒｃｈ，which tells that Whitby used to be a famous Whaling Town, St. Mary's Church and the ruins of Whitby Abbey are viewed, including the 199 Steps on the right which leads from the Henrietta Street to the church. )
Henrietta という船をもう一つ思い出します。
Whitby は１８世紀から１９世紀半ばまで捕鯨の町で、その中に最高の業績をあげたWilliam Scorsby という船長がいました。彼は、捕鯨船のマスト天辺に設置した、クジラを監視する係りを凍えるような風から守るための樽（カラスの巣、Crow's Nest と呼ばれています）を発明した人としても有名です。
彼の船の名前は ” Henrietta ” でした。
捕鯨船長Scorsbyが乗った船の名前が、WhitbyのHenrietta Street、あるいは当地の大富豪の夫人の名前に由来することは、容易に想像できます。
『８０日間世界一周』に登場した蒸気船 Henrietta 号がどのように名付けられたかは明らかではありませんが、想像しますと・・・たぶん、原作者ジュール・ベルヌは、Whitbyが当時イギリスで第３の造船地として知られていたし、彼の別の作品の中には大航海時代あるいは海洋をモチーフにしたものがいくつかありますから、クック船長が自分の故郷であるWhitbyの船を使っていたことも知っていたはずです。・・・と考えると、映画の中のHenrietta 号はWhitby のＨｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ Ｓｔｒｅｅｔを参考にしたのかもしれません。
（一般の観光客はほとんど訪れませんが、West Cliffの高台に設置された木彫りのクジラは、Whitby の捕鯨の歴史を物語っています。）
There used to be another ship with the very same name " Henrietta. "
As mentioned in my previous blogs, Whitby was once a Whaling Town.
The most famous and successful whaler from Whitby was Scorsby , who went so far to around Greenland, and caught the greatest number of whales and known as the inventor of the " Crow's Nest " which was a barrel installed at the top of her mast to protect the whale lookers from the frozen wind therewith. He seemed to be a hero in the whaling world in those days.
His ship was also " Henrietta " which must have been named either after the street under Whitby's East Cliff, " Henrietta Street " or the wife of the great squire Nathaiel Cholley in Whitby.

リチャードはGhost Walk と称してＷｈｉｔｂｙ Ｈａｒｂｏｕｒ東側のChurch Street辺りを歩きながらゴースト案内もしていました。これはストリート・パフォーマンスというのかもしれません。
Whitby 鉄道駅の方から湾に架かる Swing Bridge を渡ってすぐ左、食料品店とレストランの間に入ると間もなく Towns Hall と Market Place があります。
土曜日の夕刻８時ころ （日本では十分に夜です）、彼は、友達がブラックレターを駆使して創ってくれた”Ghost Walk ”の看板を、このTowns Hallの柱に掛けてお客さんを待っているのでした。
この日は僕も一緒に立っていると、やがてお母さんとお子さん連れの２人が近づいてきて、そのGhostをぜひ体験したい、と言っていました。Ghost と言っても、お化け屋敷のような仕掛けがあるわけではなく、歩きながら、単にRichardの怖い話を聞くだけですが・・・。
リチャードと正規のお客さんと僕を含めた４人で、湾に並行したSandgate通りを北の海に向かって出発して、右側の興味そそられる商店街の隙間にある細い路地階段を上りChurch Streetの所で左折し、そして崖上のセントメアリー教会に続く苦行の１９９階段、１９９ Stepsの所まで来ました。
ここがＲｉｃｈａｒｄのＧｈｏｓｔ Ｗａｌｋの終点であり、Ｈｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ Ｓｔｒｅｅｔの始点にもなっていました。
Ｈｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ Ｓｔｒｅｅｔへの入り口の道端では、Ｗｈｉｔｂｙ特産の漆黒のJETのネックレスやピアスや指輪などを加工しながら売っている露天商さんがいました。それがＨｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ Ｓｔｒｅｅｔ、崖下のＷｈｉｔｂｙ Ｈａｒｂｏｕｒの景色、崖上の教会と、廃墟と化した修道院など、さらに昔、 ビクトリア女王がWhitby のＪｅｔを愛用していたという歴史と複雑に絡み合って、Ｈｅｎｒｉｅｔｔａ ＳｔｒｅｅｔそしてＷｈｉｔｂｙの奥深さを感じさせるのでした。
Ghost Walk の途中、East Cliffの崖下の海岸はドラキュラが漂着して不気味な場所として知られているはずなのに、お客さん親子はニコニコと楽しそうでした。２人合計８ポンド、当時の日本円で約１５００円を払っていますから、好きなGhostの物語りを楽しんだ、ということでしょうか。あるいは、まん丸い目をぎょろりとさせ、口を大きく開けて、両手を広げて、さも恐ろしいでしょう、というようなRichardの仕草が面白かったのかもしれません。

There around Church Street and Henrietta Street, Richard performed or guided as a Ghost Teller , walking thereabout, to audience who loved thrillers.
On a Saturday late afternoon about 8 o'clock in the UK., perfect night in Japan, he and I were standing at the Town Hall with a billboard and expecting some audiences. The billboard, whereon " Ghost Walk " was painted in black letter by his friend, anon attracted a couple, a boy and his mother. We, three people, the two guests and I, started to ramble around following Richard and listened to his fearful but interesting stories, not only on Whitby's Ghost but also its history.
Whitby is also known as Dracula's Town, for he drifted to the coast of East Cliff, which would let the ghost walkers get thrilled more....
The author Bram Stoker wrote the odd story as he stayed on the West Cliff in Whitby.
Nowadays we encounter a conspicuous Dracula Shop along the West Pier, quite near to the Swing Bridge.
Thus we four strolled up to the end of Church Street, whereat the tough 199 Steps started, which led to the ST. Mary's Church, top of the cliff .
That spot was actually the beginning of the " Henrietta Street " where a man was crafting and selling accesorries of the popular gem JET at a vending stall.
There is a lovely story that the JET used to be loved by Queen Victoria.
Coal coloured necklaces and earrigns are always nice souvenirs for my Japanese friends. Then I am always allured into those shops.
Now backe to the Ghost Walk a little, the guests of two seemed quite attracted not only by Richard's practiced talk but also his exaggerated behaviours,stretching his arms with his eyes fully opened.
